Ralph Sutton
Ralph Earl Sutton (* 4. November 1922 in Hamburg , Missouri ; † the thirtieth December 2001 in Evergreen , Colorado ) was an American Dixieland jazz - pianist .
Live and act
After only performing locally in Missouri at the beginning of his career, he later played at Eddie Condon's Club in Greenwich Village , New York . In 1956 he moved to the west coast of the USA to San Francisco , where he performed with Bob Scobey 's Dixielandband and recorded various records. From the 1960s on, he worked mostly as a solo artist, but also performed with The World's Greatest Jazz Band , which he co-founded in 1968. He was known as a stride pianist in the tradition of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller . Ruby Braff , Milt Hinton , Al Hall , Bob Wilber , Jay McShann , Gus Johnson , Marty Grosz , Frank Capp and Butch Miles have contributed to his numerous records . His sister Barbara Sutton Curtis also performed as a duo with him.
Sutton performed in Germany with Reimer von Essen and Trevor Richards (album Easter Parade , 1999) and toured Australia frequently ; shortly before his death, the live album At Bob Barnard's Jazz Party was recorded there in 1999 . Sutton died in 2001 and became a member of the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame the following year
