Dixieland
Dixieland or short- Dixie is a common synonym for the southern states of the USA . In a narrower sense, the nickname Dixieland - like the name Southern States - refers to the eleven states that became members of the Confederate States of America in 1861 : South Carolina , Mississippi , Georgia , Louisiana , Florida , Alabama , Texas , Virginia , Arkansas , North Carolina, and Tennessee (in order of entry).
The term became popular through the hymn Dixie "(I wish I was in Dixie").
origin
There are different theories about the origin of the name:
- French was spoken in part of Louisiana and the Citizens' Bank of Louisiana issued ten dollar bills, which were particularly coveted because of their intrinsic value. The French number dix (ten) was printed on the back . The notes came to be known as Dixies .
- The boundary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland was measured by surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and is therefore called the Mason-Dixon Line . It was the dividing line between the slave- keeping and the free states: south of the Mason-Dixon Line, the economy was based largely on slavery until the Civil War (1861–65), to the north of which slavery had been since the American War of Independence (1775–83) has been phased out.
