Marty Grosz

Marty Grosz , actually Martin Oliver Grosz (born February 28, 1930 in Berlin ) is an American musician (guitar, banjo , vocals) of traditional and mainstream jazz .

Live and act

Grosz , who came from a musical family and grew up in New York City (his father is the painter George Grosz , his brother is the physicist and aviation historian Peter Michael Grosz ) initially worked as a rhythm guitarist. In 1950/51 he recorded with Dick Wellstood , John Dengler and Pops Foster . From 1954 he lived in Chicago for twenty years , where he worked with Albert Ammons , Floyd O'Brien , Art Hodes and Jim Lannigan. In 1975 he returned to New York, where he worked with his own groups and the Soprano Summit by Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern , for which he also wrote a number of arrangements. He was also involved in projects with Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart and played with Dick Hyman's New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra .

In 1986 he became a member of the Classic Jazz Quartet , which also included Dick Wellstood, Joe Muranyi and Dick Sudhalter , and for which he also arranged. He also worked with Keith Ingham and successfully pursued a solo career after the quartet broke up. He also played concerts with Joe Pass , Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd .

Grosz also works as a jazz journalist.
