action

Adrienne Willis lives alone with her daughter and son. Her husband Jack left her a few months ago. When the children are handed over, he speaks to her and wants them to live together again. She has to be clear about the changed situation and does not promise him anything. She drives to the coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina , where she runs a hotel owned by her friend. On the weekend she only has one guest, doctor Paul Flanner, who feels guilty after one of his patients dies during an operation. He travels to Rodanthe and lives as the only guest in the hotel.

Flanner wants to speak to the deceased's husband after he has written to him. A first discussion fails due to the behavior of the patient's son. Flanner wants to leave. An emerging storm brings Adrienne Willis together with the doctor. After speaking to the patient's husband again, Flanner travels to South America to see his son. He is also a doctor and Flanner has not seen or spoken to him for a year.

Adrienne finally separates from her husband despite her daughter's opposition. She and Flanner write love letters to each other while he is in South America. But Flanner is not returning from South America. The son comes to her and tells her that he owes it to her that he and his father were able to have a good time. Flanner died in a landslide. In her grief, Adrienne reconnects with her pubescent daughter.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on September 25, 2008 that the film tries to make viewers cry by using one "clunky device" after another. The plot contains numerous clichés and tricks.

"[...] the story [...] is written tearfully. But when it comes across as artificially kitsched up, as in the direction of George C. Wolfe, then even Richard Gere's wrinkled eyes can't move the heart. As the graying lover of the badly grimacing Diane Lane, it is not easy for him, but with this film only one thing would have helped: cancel after reading the script. "
