Jeanine Tesori

Jeanine Tesori (born November 10, 1961 in Port Washington , New York , formerly known as Jeanine Levenson in her career ) is an American composer and arranger .

Life

When she saw an off-Broadway production of Godspell at the age of 14, she said she felt like she didn't want to be anywhere else. Nevertheless, she later started another education, but then switched to studying music, which she graduated from Barnard College .

She lives in Manhattan with her husband, arranger and conductor Michael Rafter, and their daughter Siena .

Jeanine Tesori made her Broadway debut in 1995 when she wrote dance music for the revival of the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying . In 1997 she wrote the music for the off-Broadway musical Violet , for which she received several awards. She then composed and arranged for other musicals and revues.

In 2000 she composed additional music for the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie , for which she received a Drama Desk Award and a nomination for a Tony Award . Since then she has also written the music for several films and worked on other musicals.

In December 2013 her opera The Lion, The Unicorn, and Me , based on the children's book of the same name by Jeanette Winterson with a libretto by JD McClatchy , premiered at the Kennedy Center in a production of the Washington National Opera .
