Drama Desk Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Drama Desk Award is a New York theater award that is presented annually in several categories. It is the only New York theater prize that is not awarded separately according to the categories Broadway , Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions, so that large professional musical productions and small backyard productions compete against each other in one category. It has been awarded since 1955 and, along with the Tony Awards, is considered the most important New York theater prize.

history

The Drama Desk organization was founded in 1949 by New York theater critics, journalists, editors, and publishers to educate audiences in theater. The first Vernon Rice Awards were given in 1955 . They were named after the theater critic Vernon Rice , who pioneered the criticism of off-Broadway productions in the New York press. Initially, only off-Broadway performances were honored, until Broadway productions were also added in 1969. In 1964 the name of the award was changed. Since 1975, in addition to the winners, the nominees have also been announced for each prize. In order to remain true to its goal of continuing education, the organization also organizes public discussions with theater professionals.
