Dick Hyman
Richard Roven "Dick" Hyman (born March 8, 1927 in New York City , New York ) is an American jazz pianist and arranger .
Life
Dick Hyman was classically trained, studied at the Juilliard School and was a student of Teddy Wilson . In 1949 and 1950 Hyman played with Roy Eldridge ( Roy Eldridge and His Little Jazz Vol. 1 , 1950 ), Benny Goodman , Tony Scott and Red Norvo and appeared in Charlie Parker's musical film Hot House in 1952 . With his trio he had a first hit in the national charts in 1954 with his interpretation of the song Unforgettable by Nat King Cole . In 1956 he had a national and international hit in the pop charts with the Dick Hyman Trio with his instrumental version of the Moritat by Mackie Messer from the Threepenny Opera .
In the further 1950s and 1960s he worked primarily as a studio musician and worked with Arthur Godfrey and Leonard Feather . He was also one of the first musicians to deal with the Moog synthesizer . In the 1970s, Hyman was a member of the New York Jazz Repertory Company, founded the Perfect Jazz Repertory Quintet in 1976 and worked on the soundtracks to several of Woody Allen's films . Dick Hyman remained musically active in the following decades, for example in cooperation with Ruby Braff and Peter Appleyard .
In 2006 he was honored with the German Jazz Trophy for his life's work . In 2017, the Mayor of New York declared July 18 Dick Hyman Day .
