Under the motto "A Life for Jazz ", the " German Jazz Trophy " honors musicians who have given jazz new impulses and promoted its importance through their life's work. The prize is awarded annually jointly by the Art and Culture Foundation of Sparda-Bank Baden-Württemberg, the magazine “neue musikzeitung” and the internet portal jazzzeitung.de. The statue, endowed with € 15,000, was designed by the Stuttgart sculptor Otto Hebert Hajek .

The award ceremony takes place every year at the start of the Jazzopen Stuttgart in the SpardaWelt Event Center in Stuttgart. Accompanying the award ceremony there will be a concert by the award winner on site.

The jury includes TV presenter and jazz lover Markus Brock , editor-in-chief of the “neue musikzeitung” magazine, Andreas Kolb, managing director of the event agency Opus Jürgen Schlensog, and Martin Hettich, chairman of the Foundation for Art and Culture at Sparda-Bank Baden-Württemberg .

The idea for the award of the trophy was launched in 2001 by the Kulturgesellschaft Musik und Wort eV Stuttgart.
