The alternately in New York and Paris living writer Joe Berlin can not find a suitable wife after divorcing Steffi. Steffi and her new husband Bob Dandridge are now supporting him as his partnership advisors. You also listen patiently as the neurotic Joe talks about his plans to jump from the Eiffel Tower , considering being dead a few hours earlier, he would fly from New York to Paris on a Concorde instead of a normal plane .
Meanwhile, Dandridge's daughter Skylar wants to get married, but her fiancé Holden Spence hides the $ 8,000 engagement ring in a serving of ice cream, which is why Skylar swallows the ring.
One day in Venice , Berlin meets the married New York art historian Von Sidell and falls in love with her. It turns out that his daughter knows the psychiatrist Von Sidell treats. Together with two friends, she overhears the therapy sessions and makes notes of the patient's dreams and preferences. The liberal and progressive thinking Dandridge meanwhile grapples with other problems. His son suddenly propagates Republican campaign issues and speaks out in favor of gun ownership , school prayer and the death penalty. However, after this plunged Bob into crisis, the problem resolves on its own. A blood clot prevented the son's brain from receiving adequate oxygen. After this has been removed, he can think clearly again. The Dandridge family spends Christmas in Paris at the Hôtel Ritz . In the last scene, Joe and Steffi Dandridge talk about the time they spent together. They dance on the banks of the Seine .

The film received very good reviews. a. described in TV Movie 17/1997 as amusing and wonderfully nostalgic , in TV Spielfilm 17/1997 as a highlight . The song and dance scenes were particularly praised. Roger Ebert believes the film is possibly the best that Woody Allen has ever made:
