A Rainy Day in New York is an American romantic comedy by Woody Allen from the year 2019 . The film was completed in 2018 and was originally supposed to be released on Amazon Prime thatsame year. Due to the MeToo debate and allegations of abuse against director Woody Allen, Amazon ended its collaboration with Allen and distanced itself from the film.
The film was released on July 26, 2019 in Poland and is also expected to appear in other countries in Europe. The film was released in German cinemas on December 5, 2019.

The young student Gatsby Welles is studying at Yardley College in New York State and is the son of wealthy parents. Gatsby hates his college but stays there to be with his naive girlfriend, Ashleigh. When Ashleigh gets the chance to interview famous filmmaker Roland Pollard for her college newspaper, she and Gatsby travel to New York City. Gatsby is planning many romantic visits and wants to show his girlfriend Manhattan. He and Ashleigh arrive at an upscale hotel where the interview is scheduled to take place. When Ashleigh meets with Pollard, he is impressed by her good looks and invites her to a private screening of his new film.
Gatsby runs into an old schoolmate who is working on his own film project. He asks Gatsby to play a small role in a kissing scene. Gatsby is surprised when it turns out that his kissing partner is Shannon, the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend Amy. It starts raining during the shoot.
Gatsby tries to call Ashleigh on her cell phone to meet her later, but is upset when Pollard, his screenwriter and one of the movie stars keep Ashleigh busy. Ashleigh's interview lasted well into the afternoon. Meanwhile, Gatsby later runs into Shannon again when they both take the same taxi in a different part of town. She tells him that she had a crush on him and she refuses to hear him speak from his girlfriend. His romantic plans for the weekend to continue spending this with Ashleigh now seem to be further delayed. He calls Ashleigh again, but Ashleigh is busy and cannot speak. He goes with Shannon to her parents 'luxury apartment and sings Frank Sinatra's song Everything Happens to Me while playing her parents' piano. Talking about their love for New York, they agree that NYC's most romantic spot on rainy days is the Delacorte Clock at the Central Park Zoo at 6 p.m.
Gatsby and Shannon go to a museum exhibit. They talk about a lot, like the relationship with Amy. A little later, the two meet Gatsby's aunt and uncle, which Gatsby wants to avoid so that he does not have to go to his mother's birthday party.
Ashleigh seems to have got along with one of Pollard's big screen stars, Francisco Vega, who is also impressed by Ashleigh's good looks and who invites her to his private trailer on the set. Gatsbys still doesn't know where Ashleigh is. Without his knowledge, Ashleigh accompanies Vega to a bar and tells him drunk about Gatsby. Meanwhile, Gatsby goes to another friend to play a game of poker. Despite being distracted by the thought of his girlfriend, he doubles his total stakes to $ 15,000 while the rain continues outside. When he returns to his hotel room, he sees his girlfriend with the actor Vega on TV. He decides to have a drink and goes to a cocktail bar in Carlyle. A seductive blonde prostitute joins him. Gatsby offers her $ 5,000 to accompany him to his mother's party and pretend to be his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Ashleigh accompanies Francisco Vega to another party, where she meets Pollard again and continues her interview. Pollard is still excited about Ashleigh and wants her to be and stay with him for his next film project in the south of France. She returns to Francesco and drives him to his apartment. Ashleigh shares a joint with Vega and has a few drinks with him. The two kiss and begin to undress. However, when Vegas' girlfriend unexpectedly arrives, Ashleigh has to hide and sneaks out through a back door, even though she is only wearing underwear and a swiftly thrown coat.
At the party, Gatsby's mother realizes that the fake Ashleigh is a prostitute. She throws the prostitute out of her house and confronts her son about it. In doing so, she reveals to Gatsby that she herself worked as a prostitute at a young age and thus met Gatsby's father. Gatsby is shocked but delighted that his mother has opened up to him. Again he goes to the cocktail bar in Carlyle, where Ashleigh finally discovers him. She admits she was drunk and partying. When asked about Vega, she denies having slept with him. She promises to tell Gatsby everything the next day and make up for the lost day so that they can finally enjoy their day together in New York.
In Central Park, Gatsby and Ashleigh ride a carriage through the park. Gatsby realizes that he is unhappy with the relationship and decides to stay in New York. He gives Ashleigh some money for the carriage ride and says goodbye to her. He walks alone through Central Park until he arrives at the Delacorte Clock, where he waits. A few minutes later it strikes 6 p.m. and the carillon sounds. Shannon appears surprisingly a little later, whereupon the two kiss in the persistent rain.

In August 2017 it was announced that Timothée Chalamet , Selena Gomez and Elle Fanning would take on a role in Woody Allen's new film project. The film was produced by Letty Aronson , while Amazon Studios took care of the worldwide publication. A month later, Jude Law , Diego Luna , Liev Schreiber , Annaleigh Ashford , Rebecca Hall , Cherry Jones and Kelly Rohrbach joined the film. The shooting took place from September 11th to October 23rd, 2017.

Follow the MeToo movement
Due to renewed allegations of sexual assault from 1992 in the wake of the MeToo movement , director Woody Allen was in the media's sights even before the film was released. Thereupon Amazon ended the collaboration with Allen and distanced itself from the film. It was therefore not shown in American cinemas.
Actor Griffin Newman announced on Twitter that he will no longer work with Allen and that he regrets having worked on the film. In January 2018, actor Timothée Chalamet donated his fee to RAINN, Time's Up and the New York LGBT Center . Selena Gomez donated more than $ 1 million to Time's Up. Even Rebecca Hall donated their fees on time's up and announced that she would no longer work with Allen.
Jude Law , however, announced his continued support, saying that the treatment of Allen and the film was "a terrible shame".
