action

Bobby Dorfman is the youngest son of a Jewish jeweler in New York in the 1930s. His sister Evelyn is a teacher and his brother Ben is a gangster . Bobby doesn't want to get into his parents' business and instead finds happiness in Los Angeles . His mother Rose asks her brother Phil, the head of an influential casting agency in Hollywood , to help her son get started. Phil is married but has a secret relationship with his secretary Vonnie, whom he asks to show Bobby around town. Bobby immediately falls in love with Vonnie, who returns his feelings over time. When Phil finally makes it up to divorce his wife, Vonnie decides for him and against Bobby, whereupon he returns to New York, deeply disappointed.

He gets into his brother Ben's business and runs a nightclub with him, which he turns into an important meeting place for the New York scene. He meets the recently divorced Veronica and immediately falls in love with her. After Veronica becomes pregnant, the two marry. One night, Phil and his wife Vonnie suddenly visit Bobby's nightclub and ask him to sit down at their table. Later Bobby and Vonnie meet, Bobby shows her the city and the two discover that they still love each other. Meanwhile, the New York police are investigating Ben and eventually arrest him for murder and a variety of other crimes. He is found guilty of murder and is executed on the electric chair . Bobby is now taking over the nightclub, which is now developing even better thanks to his brother's scandals.

The film ends with two New Year's Eve celebrations, at which Vonnie and Bobby think of each other dreamily in the hustle and bustle.
