A jeweler (in Swiss also bijoutier ) is usually the owner of a specialist shop for watches and jewelry or the shop as such.

etymology

The professions of jeweler and goldsmith are often confused. It should be noted that a jeweler primarily sells, while the goldsmith, as a craftsman, produces, adapts or repairs the jewelery himself. A number of jewelers have integrated their own goldsmiths' workshops into their company. The same applies to watchmaker workshops. If this is not the case, the jewelry and watches will be sent to external companies - provided repairs are offered.

The job title of a jeweler is, at least in Germany, not legally protected, which means that everyone can call themselves a jeweler. Training in jewelry stores usually leads to a degree in retail sales .

In addition to medium-sized jewelers with one or a few shops, there are now also jewelery chains. Signet Jewelers Limited , known as the Ratner Group from 1949 to 1993 and Signet Group plc from 1993 to September 2008, is the world's largest jewelry chain. The Bermuda-based company, which is headquartered in the UK, is traded on both the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange . The company focuses on mid-range jewelry and watch sales and is the market leader in both the US and the UK. The chains "Jared" in the USA and "Ernest Jones" or "Leslie Davis" in Great Britain, which belong to the company, are active in the upper price segment.
