Hollywood Ending is an American comedy film directed by and with Woody Allen from 2002. The film opened the Cannes International Film Festival that same year .
action
Val Waxman (Woody Allen) was a star director. But the fame is gone and instead of big film productions, Waxman only shoots TV commercials. After he was fired from his most recent engagement - he was supposed to be shooting an advertisement for a deodorant in Alaska - he tried to land a real film project again. In fact, he's been offered a major blockbuster production out of the blue , but it turns out that the offer comes from his ex-wife Ellie ( Téa Leoni ), who is in a relationship with the head of a film studio ( Treat Williams ) - the same man they left Waxman for Has.
At the request of his manager ( Mark Rydell ), Waxman accepts the offer, but shortly before the start of shooting, a psychosomatic stress reaction overcomes him : Waxman is temporarily blind. With the help of his manager and his girlfriend ( Debra Messing ) he tries to shoot the film and to hide his blindness from the team and especially the studio boss.
Reviews
Hollywood Ending met with somewhat mixed criticism. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film was rated 48% after evaluating 131 reviews. In summary, it says: "Although Hollywood Ending has some great one-liners, the film's promising premise doesn't seem mature."
- Michael Wilmington wrote in the Chicago Tribune that while the film is not perfect, you have to be blind not to see its qualities.
- Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times that Woody Allen was his own worst enemy. Its presence in the comedy makes it almost impossible to watch it.
Remarks
The comedy was shot in New York City on a budget of $ 16 million . It opened in US cinemas on May 3, 2002, and in German-speaking Switzerland on December 12, 2002.
Due to artistic disagreements, Woody Allen fired cameraman Haskell Wexler during the first week of filming . The position was then taken over by Wedigo von Schultzendorff .
The DVD has only been released in the original English version. This makes Hollywood Ending, along with the television film Don´t Drink the Water, the only Woody Allen film for which no German language dubbing is available.
