Debra Lynn Messing (born August 15, 1968 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) is an American actress and film producer who gained international fame primarily for her role as Grace Adler in the sitcom Will & Grace .

life and career

Debra Messing grew up as the daughter of Brian and Sandra Messing in Brooklyn and Providence ( Rhode Island ). She is Jewish of Russian and Polish descent.

Brass gained her first stage experience in high school, where she took part in several musical productions. In 1986 she was elected Junior Miss Rhode Island and qualified for the Junior Miss USA competition. Her parents encouraged her to pursue an acting career, but required her to complete an education beforehand. She then studied drama at Brandeis University in Waltham ( Massachusetts ). After graduating summa cum laude in 1990 , she attended the Graduate Acting Program at New York University .

Brass began her professional acting career with the play Angels in America: Perestroika . She then played a minor supporting role in the NYPD Blue police series . She made her acting debut in 1995 when she impersonated a minor role in the drama So Close to Heaven at the side of Keanu Reeves . Thereupon the US television station Fox noticed her and offered her a leading role in the sitcom Ned & Stacey , in which she plays a frustrated young woman next to Thomas Haden Church who marries her disliked roommate out of financial hardship. Bad ratings for the sitcom led to it being discontinued after the second season. This was followed by guest appearances in series such as Seinfeld and the lead role in the mystery series Prey, which was discontinued after only thirteen episodes . In 1998 she made her breakthrough in the series world with her role as Grace Adler in the sitcom Will & Grace , for which she won an Emmy in 2003 . Simultaneously with Will & Grace , she starred in several Hollywood films, such as Hollywood Ending , The Mothman Prophecies (both 2002), ... and then came Polly (2004) and Wedding Date (2005). She also played the lead role in the miniseries The Starter Wife .

Brass received a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2001 and an Emmy in 2003.

2008 Brass was in the comedy The Women on the side of Meg Ryan and Eva Mendes to see. From 2012 to 2013 she played the lead role of Julia Houston in the US musical series Smash . In 2014 she acted on Broadway in the play Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley . From 2014 to 2016 she played the title character in the crime series Detective Laura Diamond .

Brass married fellow actor and film producer Daniel Zelman in 2000 , but the couple separated in 2011. In June 2012, they filed for divorce. The two have a son (* 2004) together.
