The Bible - Jesus is a two-part television film about the life of Jesus of Nazareth , which was broadcast on German-language television on December 25, 1999 on ARD .

action

The story of the film begins when Jesus is already an adult. He travels with his foster father Joseph through the villages, where they - mostly unsuccessfully - look for work as carpenters. Rome exploits the impoverished people, the people go hungry. Jewish tax collectors roam the villages and the Jewish government under Herod Antipas supports the tyranny.

After the death of his father, the carpenter Joseph, Jesus hesitates to follow his calling. But Maria encourages him, and so he leaves his previous life behind. As he performs a multitude of miracles, more and more people join him. But this makes him a danger to the religious and secular rulers of Judea. At the Last Supper, Jesus said goodbye to his disciples and awaited betrayal by Judas. Once again, Jesus resists the temptations of Satan and prepares for a cruel death on the cross. But three days later his burial chamber is empty and Jesus appears to his disciples. Let them proclaim that love has conquered death. At the end of the film you see Jesus walking along the promenade of a modern port city in modern clothes. He meets a group of children who laughingly run up to him and hug him.

background

The film, shot in Morocco and Malta, combines familiar Bible films with modern elements. For example, using the conditions in today's Third World, Satan shows Jesus that the carpenter could change all their misery. Later, on the evening before Jesus ' crucifixion , “he” tempts him again, demonstrating that Jesus' death on the cross will only evoke the Inquisition and the Crusades , and that he should not go through the ordeal. Jesus is portrayed as a man in love with a woman who was literally urged by his mother to begin his mission.

criticism

The lexicon of international films described the film as an "elaborate Bible adaptation". “The first part” takes “a lot of artistic freedom”, while the second part “only works off a list of Bible passages”. "The climax of the conventionality are the crucifixion and the subsequent earthquake, the destructive consequences of which the computers caused." Overall, however, the film goes "beyond mediocrity", it has "a wealth of interesting approaches that one would have liked to see developed further" .
