The two-part Bible adaptation The Bible - Joseph is the fifth part of the series The Bible and after " The Bible - Abraham " the second two-part.

Part 1

On the slave market of Auaris a young man to be Potiphar sold, the superintendent of the bodyguard of Pharaoh . The new slave is humiliated and humiliated on Potiphar's estate by his manager Ednan. Yet he can work skillfully and, especially for slaves, he can read. Even Potiphar's wife began to be interested in the young, handsome man. It turns out that his name is Joseph and that he comes from the land of Canaan . What distinguishes Joseph in Potiphar's eyes, however, is the will to recognize only one God and not to bow to Ra . That is why Potifar appoints Josef as estate manager and Ednan's assistant.

One day - Josef is taking a bath - Potiphar's wife enters his room. She fell in love with Josef and would like to have sexual intercourse with Josef . But he refuses to betray Potifar and evades the advances of his mistress. When she tries again a few days later and Josef also refuses to sleep with her, she calls Potifar on the same day and accuses Joseph of raping her .

But Potifar, convinced of Joseph's innocence, gives him the opportunity to defend himself. Joseph begins to talk about his past.

As a child, the tribe of his father Jacob camped at the Hivite Shechem and was invited to a festival by his father's king Hamor . At this festival, Prince - Shechem - named after the city, raped Joseph's half-sister Dina . Jacob then considers an alliance with the Shechemites and, at the request of his sons, who are already planning their revenge, demands circumcision as a sign of goodwill . His sons Simeon and Levi attack the city and kill the inhabitants, who are weakened by wound fever. Jacob's tribe is then forced to move on. On the road to Bethlehem , Rachel , Joseph's mother, gives birth to his brother Benjamin , but dies after his birth.

Nine years later - Josef is now a teenager and has to look after the cattle with his ten oldest brothers. He watches his brothers slaughter cattle, something their father prohibited. When Joseph tells this to Jacob, his brothers' anger begins to germinate. Joseph receives a coat from Jakob and the promise that he will later become the leader of the tribe. But this is just the beginning. When he has dreams in which not only his brothers, but also his parents bow to him, the anger of the brothers begins to turn into hatred.

A few weeks later, Josef has to go to his brothers in the field. After days of searching, he finds her near Dothan . They have long since come up with the plan to murder Josef. When he arrives, they grab him, push him into a cistern and leave the 17-year-old to his own devices. The next day, an Ishmaelite caravan passes the pasture. The brothers then sell Joseph to the strangers, Jacob they fake Joseph's death.

Potifar has heard enough. He does not have Josef killed, as his wife wished, but only thrown into prison .

Part 2

Seven years have passed since Joseph was thrown into prison by Potiphar. Thanks to his talent, he worked his way up to become a prison warden. One day two prisoners, the Pharaoh's cupbearer and the baker , are taken to the prison. Potifar, anxious to see Joseph free again one day, advises him to look after the two of them, since only one could have stolen the Pharaoh's bracelet and the other is innocent. He is supposed to intercede for Josef. While the cupbearer is well-disposed towards Josef, the baker begins to show contempt for Josef. He hates and humiliates the Hebrew . He even whips Josef in order to distinguish himself in front of his superiors.

Judah founded its own tribe in Canaan . He, who once suggested selling Josef, is plagued by guilt. But he has to deal with problems of a completely different nature. His daughter-in-law Tamar is pregnant, although his two older sons are dead and his younger one has not slept with her either. He has to obey the law and plans to have Tamar killed. The night before the execution of the sentence, Tamar appears in Judah's tent and shows him his staff and seal. Now it falls like scales from his eyes. He once slept with a prostitute in a Canaanite city and promised her a sheep in return. As a pledge he gave her his staff and his seal. However, the woman did not come to the agreed meeting point. That whore is Tamar who wanted a child. Judah revises his plan to kill Tamar and gives her life.

In Egypt, the cupbearer and the baker are plagued by dreams that Joseph is supposed to interpret at Potiphar's urging. The cupbearer's dream means that he will be reinstated at Pharaoh's court, the baker's dream that he will be executed. As Joseph predicted, it will happen.

The Pharaoh himself also has dreams, but none of his priests and astrologers can interpret them. The cupbearer tells the ruler of Egypt about Joseph, whom the pharaoh has brought. Joseph predicts a seven-year boom in Egypt , which will be followed by a seven-year famine. Joseph advises Pharaoh to choose a wise man and make him steward over Egypt, who will stock up on food supplies during the years of prosperity. The Pharaoh then appoints Joseph as this administrator and calls him " Zafenat-Paneach ". He gives him Asenath as his wife, a young Egyptian woman with whom Joseph also falls in love.

Seven years later, Asenath gave birth to Joseph two sons, Efraim and Manasseh , the famine breaks out. Joseph's brothers are also forced to travel to Egypt and face Zafenat-Paneach. While he recognizes her, her brother, believed dead, is a stranger to her. Joseph is very angry and asks to see confirmation that they are really ten sons of a man named Jacob to see their youngest brother. He keeps Simeon hostage.

In Canaan, Jacob refuses to let Benjamin go. But as the famine grows, the old man has to give in.

For the second time in Egypt, Josef sees Benjamin again after 20 years. He treats him generously, like his other brothers.

The next day, however, he lets Ednan, who has become Josef's property manager, pursue his brothers. He accuses her of stealing Joseph's golden cup. Ednan finds what he is looking for in Benjamin's sack. Joseph then wants to enslave Benjamin, but his brothers stand up for their youngest brother. Now he recognizes that they have improved and reveals himself to them.

Joseph tells his brothers to return to Canaan and get his father. In Goschen , the tribe is said to be spared the famine. A few days later, Josef drove towards the tribe and after 20 years met again with his father Jakob.

Shot in the Moroccan Ouarzazate and its surroundings. In contrast to many other genre films, the costumes and sets appear authentic and believable.

Most of the biblical story was reproduced in detail, although in Genesis the character of Potiphar from the time Joseph was thrown into prison is no longer mentioned. In Part 2, Potifar also intervenes very actively in Josef's career later. Portraying the baker as a villain also gives the film drama , but not faithfulness to the Bible.

If the three sequels and also the subsequent films are projects in which German leading actors also took part, only one well-known German face is present here with Arthur Brauss . Critics therefore criticize the Americanization of the film, even though it is a co-production .
