Martin James Landau (born June 20, 1928 in Brooklyn , New York - † July 15, 2017 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor . In 1995 he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Ed Wood . He gained international fame through the television series Kobra, You take over and Moon Base Alpha 1 .

Life

The son of Selma (née Buchman) and Morris Landau came from a Jewish family. His father, a mechanic from Austria, fought to save his relatives from persecution by the Nazis . At the age of 17, Martin Landau became an illustrator for the New York Daily News , for which he worked for a total of five years. At that time he also assisted Gus Edson as a cartoonist on the comic strip The Gumps . He then attended the Actors Studio by Lee Strasberg , where he met with fellow student James Dean became friends. Landau first appeared in Hollywood films in the late 1950s . In 1955 he met the actress Barbara Bain , who took acting lessons with him. They were married in 1957. Two years later he got his first role in a major Hollywood film, Hitchcock's thriller The Invisible Third , he played a henchman with homosexual undertones.

In Germany, Landau was best known for his many years of work in the television series Mondbasis Alpha 1 and Kobra, take over . There were also numerous guest roles in popular series such as Bonanza or Smoking Colts . In 1969, however, the end came for him at Kobra, take over, as he was removed from the series due to excessive fee claims. Thereupon his wife Barbara Bain got out of the series despite a valid contract. Landau celebrated his greatest success in later years through appearances in films by Woody Allen and Tim Burton . In Burton's biopic Ed Wood , he played the role of the worn-out Dracula actor Bela Lugosi , for which he received the Oscar for best supporting actor . Other nominations he received for his roles in the film drama Tucker by Francis Ford Coppola and Allen's mix of drama and comedy Crimes and Misdemeanors . The actor has received a Golden Globe Award three times and was shortlisted for an Emmy five times .

Landau portrayed Jacob in the film adaptation of the Bible, The Bible - Joseph , and in In the Beginning , another film adaptation of the Bible, he embodied Abraham . In the television film Max and Helen he portrayed Simon Wiesenthal . In addition to his cinema roles, he had a regular guest role in the crime television series Without a Trace . Until recently he was active as an actor, his oeuvre encompasses more than 150 film and television productions.

His marriage to Barbara Bain has two daughters who both work in the film business. While Susan Landau Finch is a producer , Juliet Landau chose the profession of actress. In 1993 Martin Landau divorced. He died in July 2017 at the age of 89 at Los Angeles University Hospital after unexpected complications.
