occupation

The Majestic is an American drama film directed by Frank Darabont in 2001 . Author Peter Appleton, played by Jim Carrey , is suspected of being a communist during the McCarthy era , leading to his being denied assignments. When drunk, he had an accident and lost his memory. He is found near a small town where he is believed to be a missing war hero.

action

The action takes place in the United States in the 1950s. Peter Appleton is a writer who writes screenplays for B-movies. He hopes to be able to work on more serious projects one day.

Appleton is suspected of being a communist for attending a meeting of the Bread Instead of Bullets organization . Although he only did it to be closer to a woman, the assignment for a new script is canceled. Appleton gets drunk and has a car accident near the small town of Lawson, resulting in amnesia .

Townspeople believe he is Luke Trimble , who returned from World War II . His supposed father Harry Trimble and his supposed girlfriend Adele Stanton accept him. You're helping him reopen the rundown cinema The Majestic .

Politician Elvin Clyde believes that Appleton's sudden disappearance can only mean that he is a key communist agent. When the film Sand Pirates of the Sahara , for which Appleton wrote the screenplay, is shown in the cinema , his memories come back. Even so, he makes Harry, who is dying of a heart attack, believe he is his son. During the funeral service, he reveals the truth to Adele. She replies that she already suspected it.

Appleton's lawyer advises his client to make a confession in which he should admit to being a communist. Instead, Appleton gives a speech about American ideals to a working group of the US Congress , which is well received. The suspicions against him are found to be irrelevant.

He returns to Lawson, where - unexpectedly for him - he is received as a hero.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in the Hollywood Reporter on December 17, 2001 that the film was the "most aggressive" retro film in recent years. He looks like the director is deliberately trying to make a film that is 50 years old. The script was written “sentimental” and “simplified” from today's perspective. Honeycutt praised the images of the landscapes of Northern California.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was reminiscent of older comedies by Frank Capra or Preston Sturges . The staging is "sentimental" and "exaggerated". The historical events are presented “simplified”.
