The fog (original title: The Mist ) is a science fiction - horror film from the year 2007 by director Frank Darabont , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. The basis was the story of the same name by Stephen King , which was first published in 1985 in the short story collection Skeleton Crew (German title: Im Morgengrauen ).

action

After a storm near the small town of Castle Rock in Maine , the house where the artist David Drayton lives with his wife and son Billy was damaged by fallen trees. David drives into town with his son and neighbor, Brent Norton, to do some shopping at the local supermarket and get supplies for the makeshift repairs.

An impenetrable mist spreads across the area. Scary beings seem to linger in this fog, attacking and killing people. A group of people holed up in the supermarket, including Brent, David and his son Billy.

Mrs. Carmody, a religious fanatic , gives some of the survivors the idea that the fog is a punishment from God - comparable to the biblical ten plagues - and that only a human sacrifice could bring salvation. The survivors then split into two groups, each clustering around Mrs. Carmody and David. Jessup, a common local soldier stationed at the nearby military base, admits the fog is the result of the military's "Arrowhead Project," which opened a gate to another dimension and accidentally made alien creatures ours World were brought. Jessup is found guilty by Mrs. Carmody and first attacked by her followers with knives and then thrown, still alive, in front of the supermarket. There one of the monsters grabs him and disappears into the fog.

When Carmody also wants to sacrifice David's son, she is shot by Ollie, an employee of the supermarket. David manages to get to his car in the supermarket parking lot with his son and three other survivors. He first drives home, where he finds that his wife is already dead. You now decide to head south to escape the fog. On the way, a gigantic, six-legged creature trudges over them. Even when they finally ran out of gas, the end of the fog was still in sight. The four adult survivors choose to die quickly with a bullet to avoid falling victim to the creatures. However, David only has four cartridges left in his revolver - for five people. He shoots the three adults and his own son, whom he had previously promised that the monsters would never get him.

Eventually David leaves the car and screams at the creatures he now expects to kill him. Instead, a tank slowly emerges from the fog, which is driving ahead of a long army column. The fog is slowly receding, the soldiers evacuate the survivors and use flamethrowers to attack the monsters and their breeding grounds. Realizing that he had shot his son and the others even though help was approaching, David collapses screaming.

background

Filming began in February 2007. The film was shot entirely in Shreveport , Louisiana . Production costs were around 18 million US dollars estimated. The film premiered in the US on November 21, 2007. The film was shown in German cinemas from January 17, 2008, and a week later in Switzerland. The cinema release in Austria was on February 22, 2008. The film grossed around 57 million US dollars in cinemas worldwide, of which around 1.7 million US dollars were in Germany. The US generated approximately $ 25.6 million in revenue, of which nearly $ 9 million was generated during the opening weekend.

Director Frank Darabont originally wanted the film to be released in black and white, but the studio saw financial success in jeopardy as it was believed that black and white films are not accepted by audiences these days. So the film appeared in the familiar color version. In August 2008 a 3-disc edition of the film was released, which contains the film on the second DVD in the black and white version requested by Darabont, which was called Director's Choice .

In the film, the protagonist David Drayton is an artist who paints movie posters. Director Darabont stated that he based the character on the actual movie poster artist Drew Struzan and that the opening scene in the film should pay homage to him. His studio served as a template, and Struzan also painted the poster from the opening scene especially for the film, which is supposed to allude to Stephen King's fantasy saga The Dark Tower with the portrayal of Roland von Gilead , the dark tower and the rose . In the background, there are also illustrations for the films The Thing from Another World , Pan's Labyrinth and The Condemned , the latter also being directed by Darabont. In addition to the allusion to John Carpenter's production The Thing from the Other World , Frank Darabont picked up other basic elements from The Fog , another production by John Carpenter.

Chris Owen , in the role of Norm, wears a T-shirt that reads "WKIT Radio," a Bangor radio station owned by Stephen King. Furthermore, an homage to Stephen King can be seen in an action scene in which a man falls into a bookshelf that only contains books written by Stephen King. In addition, the pharmacy visited by the protagonists bears the name "King's Pharmacy" - it is remarkable that King had a cameo in the film adaptation Thinner - The Curse of his novel The Curse , in which he appeared as a pharmacist. Finally Frank Darabont asked Stephen King if he would like to appear in a supporting role. King refused, so that Brian Libby can now be seen in the role of the biker .

According to the director's audio commentary, the nature of Mrs. Carmody's death does not accidentally resemble a scene from the film Ambassadors of Fear , but is intended as a direct reference to the film.

As a condition for his directorial work at Dimension Films , Darabont insisted that the end of the film deviating from the original would not be changed. The original conception of the film was developed at Paramount Pictures . After The Condemned and The Green Mile, as well as the short film Poisoned , Der Nebel was Darabont's fourth adaptation of a story by King. At the same time, with a running time of around 126 minutes, the film is the director's shortest full-length production to date.

Just like the director, some actors have also appeared in several film adaptations of King novels. Thomas Jane had a role in Dreamcatcher and Frances Sternhagen was involved in Misery .

For William Sadler, the film adaptation was not the first contact with King's story The Mist . He had previously recorded the role of David Drayton on an audio production of the story .

As a fan of the US television series The Shield - The Shield was the creator of the series director Darabont Shawn Ryan invited to direct the film for a series of what he in the sixth season in the episode Chasing Ghosts ( on Gespensterjagd ) did. Due to the limited budget and the tight time frame that was given to him for his feature film project Der Nebel , he later hired numerous employees of the TV series, including cameraman Rohn Schmidt, two camera assistants, the script supervisor and the film editor, which was essential for quick production and the semi-documentary "TV look" of the feature film, which differs greatly from his previous feature films. For the shooting, which took place on 37 days, a six-week break in filming was used in the production of the television series.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judges the film to be "a complex, disturbing, excitingly staged horror film based on a template by Stephen King, which gives the genre new creative impulses."

Stephen King said he was “genuinely frightened” by Darabont's adaptation of his short story. Frank Darabont described this statement as the "happiest moment of his career".

In the opinion of the editors of Kultur SPIEGEL , Der Nebel is a "nice scary trash, in which Stephen King director Darabont orders his panicked clientele to go crazy in the manner of" Lord of the Flies "and an unusual ending."

TV adaptation

In September 2015 it was announced that the story of King would be filmed as a television series. The plot revolves largely around a new story, with the fog and its mysteries still in the foreground. The series was developed by Dimension Television, a production company of The Weinstein Company that already produced the film. This started on June 22, 2017 on US television.
