The Shield is an American crime series . It was first broadcast on March 12, 2002 on FX Network . With its content and style, The Shield can be seen as a continuation of successful predecessors such as New York Cops - NYPD Blue , Homicide or Third Watch - Operation at the Limit , which increasingly deal with the realistic depiction of routine police work. A handheld camera is often used, which is in the middle of the action, in order to convey an even more realistic plot to the viewer. The structure comes very close to a documentation. Basically it's about the fight against drug and gang crime, the murder as the main plot of classic crime series takes a back seat.

content

In The Shield is about the daily life of a police station in Los Angeles. Captain David Aceveda (Captain in Seasons 1-3) wants to make his Los Angeles district safer. The captain, who also has political ambitions, is a thorn in the side of the anti-gang special unit Strike Team . Under the leadership of Detective Vic Mackey, this force of special forces succeeds in noticeably reducing the crime rate in the district. In doing so, they rarely adhere to regulations; they bribe, threaten and abuse drug dealers and gangsters and embezzle drug money.

Television broadcasts

The series first aired on March 12, 2002 in the United States on the US cable broadcaster FX Network . In the fall of 2008, the seventh and final season of the series aired.

The German-language first broadcast took place from autumn 2004 on ProSieben . There the series did not achieve nearly as much success as in the US and was canceled after the first season. The reason for this was the poor ratings. The first three seasons were shown on the pay TV channel AXN and then gradually released on DVD. From August 19 to October 14, 2007, kabel eins again broadcast the first season on free TV . Due to bad ratings, the broadcast was not continued again and stopped after nine episodes.

As of November 2007, the fourth season was broadcast on AXN. The 13th and final episode of this season aired on Saturday January 26th, 2008. From August 2, 2008, AXN also broadcast the fifth season. The sixth season ran from November 30, 2009 to February 1, 2010 on AXN. The seventh and final season ran from April 22 to July 14, 2011 on AXN.

The canceled broadcast of the first season on kabel eins was continued in January 2012, after which season two received its German free TV premiere from January 5 to 13, 2012. Seasons three and four should also receive their German free TV premieres on this slot.

DVD / BD publications

In Germany, all seven seasons of The Shield are available on DVD. The first season is uncut, the second and third seasons were only released on DVD in abbreviated form , despite the label “ No youth release” and so no longer correspond to the original US version.

The fourth season was released on July 24, 2008 and comprises a total of 13 episodes. In contrast to the second and third seasons, it was released uncut in Germany despite an FSK-16 approval - only a short flashback at the beginning of the tenth episode is missing.

The fifth season was released in Germany on November 18, 2008.

The sixth season DVD box has been available in Germany since December 10, 2009. The US version of the sixth season was only released on August 26, 2008, about six months after its release in the UK (March 24, 2008). The delay came because 20th Century Fox transferred the previous publishing rights to Sony in mid-2008. In the UK, the DVD box was released earlier because Sony was the rights holder from the start. In the meantime, the DVD boxes for seasons 1 to 5 previously released by 20th Century Fox have also been re-released in the USA by Sony.

The seventh and final season was released on July 21, 2011 in Germany.

A DVD box with all seven seasons has been available in the USA since November 3, 2009. A comparable DVD box was released in Germany on December 8, 2011 exclusively on Amazon .

Almost a decade later, on December 18, 2018, a Blu-ray Disc box with all seven seasons was released in the USA.

Seasons

season 1

The first season premiered on March 12, 2002. Captain David Aceveda wants to make his Farmington district in Los Angeles safer. He is also aiming for a political career, and the strike team is a thorn in his side. Vic Mackey and his Strike Team establish themselves in Farmington and reduce the crime rate in the district noticeably. The season also deals with the training of Julien Lowe under Danny Sofer and Julien's difficulties in accepting his homosexuality. The corrupt activities of Ben Gilroy are also part of the first season.

season 2

The second season premiered on January 7, 2003. Much of this season revolves around a new drug lord hindering drug trafficking on the Strike Team. The Mexican drug lord Armadillo is involved in various crimes. B. Farmington's "regular dealer" appointed by the Strike Team and raped a little girl. Mackey's personal life comes to the fore this season. After Mackey's ex-boss threatens Vic's wife after committing a crime, she becomes fearful for her family and leaves Vic with her children. In the meantime, the strike team becomes aware of a money train (truckloads of dirty money from the Armenian mafia) and they decide to rob it. The second season ends with the successful completion of the robbery and the stolen money.

season 3

The third season, which started on March 9, 2004, is mainly about the money train robbed by the Strike Team and the effects of this robbery. As it turns out, individual notes from the loot were marked by the Ministry of Finance in order to actually arrest the Armenians. A little later it turns out that one of the participants must have stolen a small part of the sum ($ 7,000). Shane has a new girlfriend and will marry her over the course of the season. Due to expensive gifts and the sudden appearance of marked notes, Shane is initially suspected. However, it turns out that his wife stole the money, so the Strike Team is mostly busy this season keeping the money safe and fending off any suspicion. At the end of the season there were bigger and bigger differences, which ended with "Lem" Lemanski destroying most of the stolen money on his own initiative. This dispute leads to the fact that the Strike Team disintegrates in the final episode. The danger posed by the Armenians is averted by a fatal shot by Vic Mackey at the Armenian boss. Captain David Aceveda is raped and seeks revenge, which ends with killing one of his tormentors and arresting the other. Detectives Wagenbach and Wyms spent a long time looking for a serial rapist, the so-called "Kuschler", who coerced and murdered older women.

Season 4

With the fourth season, which premiered on March 15, 2005, a new captain is introduced. Monica Rawling, played by Glenn Close , replaces Captain David Aceveda, who is now on the city council. There are a few layoffs in the police station, but also new faces. The strike team, which split up at the end of season three, comes back to itself at the end of season four. The bullying against "Dutch" experiences a high point among colleagues towards the end of the season, as Vic finds out that Dutch is having an affair with his ex-wife - of course the whole area gets it. The confiscation policy, which was launched by Captain Rawling at the beginning of the season, is making waves in the community and in politics. Antwon Mitchell, who gave the order for the murder of two patrol officers, goes unpunished thanks to the deal with the DEA in exchange for information against the Salvadorans and receives immunity. Aceveda, who arranged the deal with Antwon as a liaison man, rejects Captain Rawling and Vic Mackey's request to withdraw the agreement, indirectly allowing a police killer to run, which leads to the indignation of colleagues in the station. Captain Monica Rawling has to clear the desk towards the end of the season as the DEA and Mayor demand it. Antwon Mitchell is arrested in the last episode; his deal with the DEA falls apart because Vic Mackey and his now reinstated strike team catch the DEA's prime suspect - the drug authorities actually wanted to arrest him with the help of their key witness Mitchell. But Captain Rawling made a deal with the DEA: Antwon is legally extradited to the police and is to be sentenced in a due process. This deal, in connection with the confiscation policy, which is unpopular among the population, ultimately leads to their dismissal.

Season 5

The fifth season started on January 10, 2006. It deals with the investigation of Lieutenant Jon Kavanaughs (played by Forest Whitaker ) into the murder of Detective Terry Crowley by Vic Mackey and of Councilor David Aceveda for corruption. This is the biggest threat the Strike Team has ever faced so far. After Kavanaugh processed one of Vic's informants, the Inspectorate was notified that Lem was in possession of heroin, which he had not left in the evidence room and was found on him. Inspector arrests Lem and Kavanaugh offers him a deal: Lem should get wired and find out the truth about Terry Crowley's murder. Kavanaugh suspects Vic was involved in the murder and wants to use Lem to bring down the strike team. Although Lem agrees to this deal, he can inform the team about his wiring, so that Kavanaugh receives targeted misinformation. Kavanaugh finds out that Vic was an accomplice in robbing the money. Claudette is offered the captain's position at the end of the season and reluctantly accepts. The season ends with Shane Vendrell murdering his friend and team mate Lem with a hand grenade after mistakenly believing Lem would betray the Strike Team to Kavanaugh.

Season 6

Season 6 started on April 3, 2007. After Detective Lemansky was killed by Shane at the end of Season 5, the Strike Team is very upset about Lem's death. Shane feels guilty, becomes reckless, and has suicidal thoughts. Kavanaugh refuses to file the case and seeks witnesses and evidence to investigate Vic further. He doesn't even shrink from hiding evidence that incriminates him after a house search. Furthermore, he influences witnesses to make false statements. Dutch and Claudette, however, finally uncover Kavanaugh's machinations, whereupon he ends up in prison and Vic is thus exempt from all allegations. However, the chief plans to send Vic into early retirement, which he defends against, among other things, because he wants to get revenge on Lem's murderer beforehand. Towards the end of the season and, for the time being, Vic's tenure, a new threat begins to emerge that seems to require Vic's special abilities.

Season 7

The seventh season aired on September 2, 2008 on FX and consists of 14 episodes. This season, Vic's machinations are all gradually coming to light. His ex-wife Corinne works with the police because she and her children want to permanently evade Vic's influence, which in the end succeeds. After Shane has been almost killed by the influence of Vic and Ronnie, he also tries to kill them or to have them killed. However, his plan fails, causing him to get the attention of the police. Shane evades arrest and goes into hiding with his family. He and Mara become even more involved in crimes while trying to harm and expose Vic. In order to be safe from Shane's knowledge and to react to the impending forced retirement, Vic gets a job with the ICE and immunity for all his deeds, but also incriminates Ronnie and Shane. Ronnie is arrested by Vic's confessions and Shane, who sees himself without a way out, kills himself and his family. The series ends with Vic at a boring desk job, separated from the family and hated by the old police colleagues and the new ICE colleagues. In the final scene, Vic stands at the window and hears police sirens in the street below. He pauses for a moment, resolutely picks up his weapon and starts to leave.

Episode list

characters

Strike team

  • Detective Victor Samuel "Vic" Mackey ( Michael Chiklis ) is a corrupt but effective and motivated police officer; In his professional life, the end justifies every means that regularly brings him into conflict with the law or the regulations. He steals drugs from dealers, beats and tortures suspects, and has committed more than one murder . He is extremely loyal to his team and tries several times to prevent damage to its members. Only his family, to whom he is a caring and loving father, plays an even greater role for him. Mackey's family life is one of many storylines in the series. His marriage to his wife Corrine Mackey ( Cathy Cahlin Ryan ), a nurse, increasingly suffers from both the professional entanglements of Vic and multiple affairs and breaks up over time. The affair with Officer Sofer even resulted in an illegitimate child. Vic and his wife have three children, two of whom are autistic. The special educational needs are one of many sources of stress for him, which stress him financially and emotionally. Due to his dubious reputation, he is the subject of internal investigations several times. In the series finale, he succeeds in investigating a Mexican cartel as an undercover agent for the federal authorities. In return, he gets a job with the federal agency and full immunity for himself and his wife. Since he has to disclose all crimes committed within the framework of immunity, he incriminates Ronnie Gardocki heavily, whereupon he is arrested.
  • Detective Shane Vendrell ( Walton Goggins ) was Vic Mackey's best friend and partner - even before the Strike Team was formed. In the course of the series he gets married and has a son named Jackson with his wife Mara. His sometimes racist and carefree attitude as well as numerous questionable decisions are a regular source of conflict in the course of the series. After the strike team split up due to internal disputes, he worked temporarily for the moral department and cooperated with the gang leader Antwon Mitchell. Since Vendrell wrongly assumes that the team member Curtis Lemansky wants to testify to the police, he murders him at the end of the fifth season and covers up the act. After Mackey and Gardocki track him down, Vic tells him to leave town. Vendrell then applies for his transfer. Due to Mackey's imminent retirement, however, he revoked this a short time later. He starts a cooperation with the Armenian Mafia and betrays the team. Since he threatens Mackey and Gardocki with an incriminating testimony, they are planning an assassination attempt on him. He survived and, in turn, tries to murder Ronnie and Vic. Since the plan also fails, he is forced to flee with his pregnant wife and son. In the series finale, he eventually kills his family and himself.
  • Detective Curtis "Lem" Lemansky ( Kenny Johnson ) is an original member of the Strike Team and considers them his family. As a remorse of conscience, he burns a large part of the money stolen from the attack on the money train run by the Armenian Mafia, when the resulting disputes threaten to divide the team. In the final episode of the fifth season, he is murdered by Shane Vendrell, who falsely assumes that Lemansky wants to testify against the rest of the Strike Team.
  • Detective Ronald "Ronnie" Everett Gardocki ( David Rees Snell ) is the surveillance and electronics expert. Little is known about Ronnie, however. From time to time he has proven more and more that he is the most solid and reliable member next to Vic, with whom he goes through thick and thin and is loyal to him. The burn scars on his face that Armadillo burned him in during the second season are z. B. a proof of his loyalty to the Strike Team. Ronnie is arrested in the series finale for the crimes he committed with the Strike Team.
  • Officer Julien Lowe ( Michael Jace ) is an officer assigned to the Strike Team who never took the detective exam. He is extremely religious and for this reason tries to suppress his homosexuality, which at times puts a lot of strain on him. With the help of so-called therapy in his parish, he superficially succeeds in establishing a relationship with a woman. He's an honest cop with a clear conscience. His criticism of the expropriation policy under Captain Rawling during the fourth season brings him to the verge of a transfer. In the course of the sixth season he receives from the new Captain Wyms the offer to work in the strike team. Due to previous arguments with Vic Mackey, he initially hesitates. He finally agrees as Mackey is about to be pushed into retirement. With the end of the strike team, he is again assigned to patrol duty.
  • Detective Kevin Hiatt ( Alex O'Loughlin ) is a seasoned Homeland Security employee and has worked on the Mexican border . He is called to the Strike Team to succeed Vic as Team Leader after he has been forced into retirement. Although Hiatt is the new leader, Vic Mackey continues to exert his influence. After he begins to allow himself to be compromised by Mackey and has an affair with a police officer from the police station, Captain Wyms doubts his suitability for the position and has him recalled.

Administration and police

  • Alderman David Aceveda ( Benito Martinez ) is a politically ambitious police captain of the Farmington District, who is elected to the Los Angeles City Council during the course of the series . Aceveda is one of Vic's main rivals. Often times the two have forged uncomfortable alliances. During the unsuccessful pursuit of a suspect, he is forced to have oral sex and threatened with a gun. This incident leads him to enter into an arrangement with Antwon Mitchell to assassinate Aceveda's tormentor in prison. This puts Aceveda in a fateful feud with the station, as Antwon Mitchell orders the murder of two police officers from the Farmington station. Mitchell agrees to a deal with the DEA and is initially released towards the end of the fourth season, but is ultimately convicted and sent to prison.
  • Captain Claudette Wyms ( CCH Pounder ) is an established investigator. Claudette, Dutch's colleague, can be seen as the “voice of morals” in the “Barn” district. She is often torn apart because of Vic and his tactics. Later on in the series, she confesses to Dutch that she has had lupus for 15 years . In the fifth season she is finally proposed as captain. After she is finally appointed captain after several attempts, she wants to prove that she is more capable than her predecessors. In the end, however, she realizes that the pressure is enormous - and that managing the station and the strike team is not an easy task.
  • Detective Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach ( Jay Karnes ) is considered an outsider and clumsy guy in the area, although he is a very successful detective. Assigned to the Farmington precinct, "Dutch" is always one of the first to be called in a murder case because he specializes in profiling murder criminals and serial killers. Together with his colleague Claudette Wyms, he is the moral advocate on the area. In one scene, “Dutch” could be seen strangling a cat with his bare hands, which raises the question of who he really is for many viewers. The relationship with Shane and especially Vic is not the best right from the start. Later, this worsened mainly because “Dutch” made an appointment with Vic's wife.
  • Sergeant Danielle "Danny" Sofer ( Catherine Dent ) is a patrol officer who aspires to become a detective. As a result of a pregnancy, however, Danny was assigned to desk work and goes on maternity leave after the birth of her son. The identity of the father is initially unknown, but Vic can not be ruled out due to an occasional recurring sexual relationship between Danny and him.

Trivia

  • Franka Potente has a supporting role in three episodes of the sixth season.
  • Cathy Cahlin Ryan (Corrine Mackey) is married to series creator Shawn Ryan in real life and is friends with Michael Chiklis' wife Michelle.
  • Autumn Chiklis (Cassidy Mackey) is the real-life daughter of Michael Chiklis (Vic Mackey) and plays the daughter of Vic on the show. Chiklis himself says he would never allow her to watch the series.
  • The brands worn by the cops in the series are different from the real ones in everyday life. Both in the design and in their position on the uniforms. This was done in order to distance real police officers from the LAPD 's corruption allegation from the series.
  • The roles of detectives Ronnie Gardocki and Curtis "Lem" Lemansky were not included in the original series version. Kenny Johnson got the role of Detective Lemansky after auditioning for the role of Terry Crowley. Meanwhile, David Rees Snell, a friend of serial founder Shawn Ryan, was offered an offer to join the Strike Team for the pilot episode. He then became a permanent member of the team, even if very little is known about him to this day.
  • Walton Goggins and Kenneth Johnson are best friends in real life.
  • The role of Claudette Wyms was actually written as a male role. Charles Wyms was the original name. CCH Pounder , who plays Detective Claudette on the show, read the script and suggested the writers that the character be female, and they agreed.
  • The theme song is called "Just Another Day" by Vivian Ann Romero, Ernesto J. Bautista and Rodney Alejandro, according to The Shield - Music From The Streets , the official soundtrack. In addition, music almost only appears when it is playing in the background of the scene (e.g. from a cassette recorder ).
  • The series takes place in the same series universe as Sons of Anarchy , which can be seen from the appearance of the gangs "Byz-Lats" and "One-Niners" in both series. However, there is no direct connection as to what can be seen in the completely different supporting roles of Michael Chiklis (truck driver who has multiple contact with Jax and Gemma Teller) Walt Goggins (trans woman, prostitute and later partner of Tig Trager) and CCH Pounder (public prosecutor) at Sons of Anarchy.
