Under the Dome is an American science fiction - television series by Brian K. Vaughan , who on the same name in the original novel, The Arena of Stephen King based. The series was produced from 2012 to 2015 by Amblin Television in collaboration with CBS Television Studios for the US broadcaster CBS . It consists of three seasons with a total of 39 episodes.

The series is about a small town that, for reasons that are initially inexplicable, is cut off from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. It premiered in the United States on June 24, 2013 on CBS.

action

The series is about the small New England town of Chester's Mill, which one day will be cut off from the outside world by a transparent and soundproof dome. The trapped people try to cope with the situation. If the dome is touched, technical devices that the person touching them carry with them explode, which is fatal for some residents. After "Duke" Perkins, the city's sheriff, dies in such an accident because of his pacemaker, Deputy Linda Esquivel takes his place and tries to keep order in the city. The military clears the area around the dome and first takes a stand to explore it. When an attempt is finally made to destroy the dome by means of a bomb attack ( MOAB ), although the land outside of it is devastated, surprisingly the dome itself and the part of Chester's Mill enclosed within it survived the attack unscathed.

In addition to searching for answers about the dome, the series also deals with the residents' individual secrets. So Dale Barbara - everyone just called "Barbie" - turns out to be a debt collector who killed the secretly indebted husband of newspaper editor Julia Shumway and buried it in the woods. City Councilor James “Big Jim” Rennie started to hoard large amounts of propane gas in the city shortly before the dome appeared, for reasons that were initially unknown and attaches great importance to keeping this secret from the city's residents - if necessary with deadly force of arms hold. Rennie goes over dead bodies on other occasions as well, getting rid of Pastor Coggins, among others. Big Jim also has a strained relationship with his mentally unstable son Junior. He learns that Junior has jealously locked his ex-girlfriend Angie McAlister, a waitress at the Sweetbriar Rose diner, in an old bunker. Big Jim doesn't release them immediately. Only when he believes everyone will die from a bombing raid Rennie releases Angie.

Norrie Calvert-Hill, who is actually just passing through with her parents, same-sex couple Alice Calvert and Carolyn Hill, suffers a strange seizure in which she repeats the sentence "The pink stars fall from the sky." Angie's brother Joe, and later Angie herself, have the same attack. During the first season, Joe and Norrie become a couple and notice that they and the dome have something in common. In the forest, they eventually find a mysterious egg surrounded by a smaller version of the dome, which they believe controls the dome, or at least has great influence over it. The three also discover that the egg reacts to the laying on of the mini-dome by four hands belonging to certain people. Inside the dome is a living caterpillar that will soon become a monarch butterfly . They discovered the same butterflies earlier in connection with the great dome. Angie's assumption that Junior is the wanted fourth in the group because he suffered from the same seizures as the three years ago is confirmed. It also comes out that Junior's deceased mother painted pictures before her suicide that relate to current events in Chester's Mill.

Unexpectedly, Maxine Seagrave appears, who - as it turns out - is the client of Barbies and was also involved in drug deals with Sheriff Perkins, Reverend Coggins and Big Jim Rennie. Perkins and Rennie had propane hoarded in town in return for Maxine to keep their "business" away from Chester's Mill. Maxine blackmails Barbie against Julia, with whom he is now having an affair. When Julia and Linda discover the truth about her husband in addition to the background of the drug business and Barbie explains that he planned and provoked his death in order to support Julia financially through life insurance, Maxine no longer has any leverage against Barbie. As a result, she shoots Julia down. While Big Jim wants to get rid of Maxines, Barbie insists on keeping her alive and arresting her. He still shoots Maxine without further ado and plans to do the same with Barbie. However, Linda bursts into the situation and prevents this. Barbie uses the moment to flee, while Big Jim then discredits him in front of the citizens of Chester's Mill and calls for the death penalty for the crimes allegedly committed. Since Julia survived and is the only one who can testify that Jim is lying to the whole town, Angie takes her to a storage room in the hospital so that no one can find her. Barbie ultimately has to surrender and is arrested.

Meanwhile, Joe, Norrie, Angie and Junior have received a vision by touching the dome, which they interpret to mean that Big Jim must be killed. At first, Junior takes his father under protection, but he too is increasingly plagued by doubts. A little later Joe and Norrie are briefly arrested by Jim, who has since learned about the mini dome and the egg. While he continues to try to get Barbie to publicly plead guilty, the monarch butterfly hatches in the small dome, which is observed by Joe, Norrie, Carolyn and Ben. They are discovered by Linda, who immediately wants to confiscate the dome. The moth begins to fly around the mini-dome, creating black spots where it touches it until it finally falls to the ground and the entire dome turns black. The bystanders watch with horror how the same thing happens to the great dome.

Julia wakes up in the meantime and learns roughly what is going on from Angie. Despite the danger from Big Jim, she wants to try to help Barbie. Linda informs the others about the small dome via radio and thus also calls Junior and Big Jim. When she tries to touch the dome, like others in front of her (with the exception of Joe, Norrie, Angie, and Junior), she is injured and passed out. Junior appears first and is convinced by the others to hide the dome from Jim. A little later he finds Linda alone, who is just coming to. Angie and Julia take advantage of the moment to free Barbie and find themselves with the other three and the mini dome in the old cement factory. When the four touch the small dome again, it crumbles. The butterfly in it seems dead at first, but after Norrie touches it, it comes back to life. Since he flies to Barbie, who is still handcuffed, Joe sees his suspicion confirmed that he is the "monarch" that the dome had previously announced to them. While most of the other citizens go to church in droves, believing their doom is imminent, and Jim tries to calm them down, the egg in the mini-dome suddenly lights up and threatens to collapse the building. But when Julia takes it in hand, it calms down again, from which Barbie concludes that - instead of him - she is the monarch. Meanwhile, Junior seems to have regained his faith in Big Jim and turns his gun on Julia because he doesn't want to believe her the truth about his father. When he orders her at gunpoint to give him the egg, she throws it to Angie, Joe and Norrie, who then run away with it. Barbie engages Junior in a fight and thus enables Julia to escape as well. Because of the handcuffs, he is overpowered by Junior and arrested again.

In the meantime, Linda discovers the sentence “The pink stars are falling from the sky” written on the wall in Joe's barn and informs Jim about it. He then explains to her that his wife had said the same sentence over and over again shortly before her death and shows Linda another picture she had painted, which shows pink stars in the sky and a black egg on the ground, just like the one with which Angie, Joe, Norrie and Julia now flee into the forest. When Norrie tries to make contact with the egg, the creators of the dome appear before them in the form of their late birth mother Alice. Alice says that those who brought the dome to town want to protect Chester's Mill. When Joe and the others protect the egg, the dome will let light through again. Otherwise it would be the end of town. Jim asks Julia over the radio to give him the egg because otherwise he will leave Barbie hanging on the newly erected gallows . Julia lets the deadline pass with a heavy heart and sinks the egg to protect it in the nearby lake. Thereupon pink stars rise out of it into the sky and drive away the black of the dome, which however - as before - does not become transparent, but rather bathes the city in a bright white.

The first season ends with a cliffhanger : Barbie has the noose around her neck, Junior as the hangman has his hand on the lever for the trapdoor and Jim asks his son to operate it. However, Junior hesitates in the face of the change in the dome.

production

After Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider after the release of short Stephen King's novel The Arena had in November 2009 secured the rights to the novel, they could the idea in August 2011 when cable channel Showtime accommodate. Less than three months later, Brian K. Vaughan was commissioned to write a script. Since the project was discontinued at Showtime, however, Amblin Television asked the broadcaster to clear it for other broadcasters. So it landed in November 2012 at Showtime's sister company CBS , who brought in their production company CBS Television Studios as a co-producer. Neal Baer , who was under contract with the studio, could be engaged as showrunner , while Danish director Niels Arden Oplev directed the first episode. As Executive Producer act Spielberg, King, Baer, Vaughan, Snider, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.

Shortly after taking over the series, CBS commissioned a first season with 13 episodes to be broadcast as a summer series. Colin Ford was hired as the first leading actor in mid-January 2013 . Later that month, Natalie Martinez , Alexander Koch , Britt Robertson , Jolene Purdy and Nicholas Strong were cast in the lead roles. In February, Aisha Hinds , Mike Vogel , Dean Norris and Rachelle Lefèvre received other leading roles. A special teaser trailer was developed for Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013, which showed the official website instead of recordings of the series. There you could enter your zip code and address to see what your house and neighborhood would look like under the dome.

Filming of the first season began in Southport and Wilmington , both in North Carolina , in late February 2013 and ended in late July 2013. A speech by US President Barack Obama that was originally included in the first episode and made after Hurricane Sandy was cut out in mid-June 2013. The series differs in part significantly from the book. So some characters were written out, while a few new ones were added and the backgrounds were adjusted a bit. So that there could be a sequel, the end of the book was rewritten for the series.

Due to the success of the first season, CBS decided to continue the series. Following this, Neal Baer announced in an interview in October 2013 that he saw five seasons of 13 episodes each as the ideal length for the series. Ultimately, the series ended after just three seasons. Following the series finale, Bear said that despite the cliffhanger , he was "happy with the ending" as a possible fourth season would have been a "real challenge".

Cast and dubbing

The series was set to music at the Cinephon in Berlin . Patrick Baehr wrote the dialogue books, the dialogue was directed by Ulrich Johansson (season 1), Pierre Peters-Arnolds (season 2) and Reinhard Knapp (season 3).

Differences to the novel

  • In the book, the dome is not round, but encompasses exactly the city limits of Chester's Mill. It is also acoustically permeable, so that residents can communicate with people outside the dome. Mobile phone use and internet are also possible.
  • In the book, Julia is single and Barbie is a resident of Chester's Mill. He works as a cook at Sweetbriar Rose , but is about to leave town when the dome comes down.
  • In the series, Linda Esquivel is in a relationship with firefighter Eric "Rusty" Denton, who is outside the dome. In the novel, Rusty works in the hospital and is also trapped under the dome. He and Linda are also married (surname Everett ) and have two children.
  • Angie and Joe McAlister are not siblings in the novel and accordingly have different surnames. In addition, Angie has no relationship with Junior and is brutally murdered by him at the beginning of the novel. He then desecrated her corpse several times. In the series, she is locked in a bunker by Junior.
  • Joe is 13 years old in the novel, but significantly older in the series (16-18 years). Norrie Calvert, who is called Calvert-Hill in the series , is one of his friends in the novel, but does not become his steadfast girlfriend. In general, the importance of her character in the series is significantly greater than in the novel.
  • In the novel, Dodee is a good friend of Angie and, like her, is killed and violated by Junior. In the series, Dodee works with Phil on the local radio station, where she is shot and then burned by Big Jim. In the novel, Phil has a wife named Sammy and a young son.
  • In the novel, Big Jim doesn't have his own nuclear bunker. There is only one in the town hall. Junior doesn't keep anyone prisoner either, but collects corpses in an abandoned house.

reception

The first season of the series has a metascore of 72/100 on Metacritic , based on 35 reviews. Many critics praised the special effects . Joanne Ostrow of the Denver Post found the series not only "creepy, exciting and full of wonderful special effects", but also peppered with "big thoughts about environmental protection and the future of the planet". Loryn Pörschke from Serienjunkies.de gave the pilot episode four out of five possible stars and remarked that it was “pretty full” and contained “a lot of clichés”, but that “the viewer would not be overwhelmed quickly”. The characters are also "not exactly complex". But she praised the “strong cast” and came to the conclusion that at least the “pilot episode got off to a strong start”.

At the 2013 Critics' Choice Television Awards , the series was recognized in the Most Promising New Series category, along with five other series .

The second season, however, received only 52/100 points from 9 reviews.

Trivia

The series applies product placements : numerous scenes in the series show products from Microsoft (e.g. Surface tablets and Windows phones) and Toyota in close-up. The Toyota Prius is even mentioned by name. In contrast to surreptitious advertising, however, the end credits of the episodes refer to the advertising ("was sponsored in parts by Microsoft"). However, Toyota is also mentioned several times in the original novel because Rennie had applied (unsuccessfully due to his dubious business practices) to be their authorized dealer.

A situation similar to that of Under the Dome was already described in 1963 in the book Die Wand by Marlen Haushofer .
