action

Alan Parker, a 21-year-old student, tried suicide on Halloween 1969 and was saved by doctors. After he is released from the hospital, his girlfriend abandons him. Alan is constantly haunted by visions of death. He learns that his mother is near death after a stroke and, instead of going to the John Lennon concert in Toronto with his friends, decides to hitchhike to his mother's home to visit her in the hospital.

When he gets into George Staub's car, Alan's trip to hell begins. George is racing like crazy, shows no consideration and seems to know everything about Alan. It turns out that George is already dead. He leads Alan back to his memories and his childhood. The focus is on “The Bullet”, a roller coaster that Alan never dared to ride.

Alan finally has to make the hardest possible decision of his life. George says he's going to take someone with him to death. It is up to Alan whether this will be his mother or himself. Alan struggles with himself for a long time and ultimately decides for his life and thus the death of his mother. When Alan arrives at the hospital, he is told that his mother is on the mend. In fact, she recovers from the stroke, is discharged from the hospital, and spends three more years with her son before she dies.

background

The film was shot in Calgary and Vancouver , Canada . Filming began on November 11, 2003. The budget for the film was an estimated five million US dollars . On October 15, 2004 it celebrated its premiere in the USA. On the opening weekend, he grossed around $ 100,000 in the United States. In Europe, the film was shown in cinemas for the first time in Portugal on February 3, 2005 , while it was released as a direct-to-video production on DVD in most other European countries .

The short story on which the film is based caused a sensation in 2000 because Stephen King made it available for download in advance on the Internet as a free e-book . More than 700,000 internet users took up this offer. In retrospect, however, King complained in the preface to the collection of short stories in the Cabinet of Death that most readers were only interested in the way it was published and not in the story itself.

In Stephen King's short story, George Staub drives a Ford Mustang . In homage to Stephen King's work Christine , which tells of a student's love and dependency on his car, a red painted 1958 Plymouth Fury with a white top, the Ford Mustang was replaced by a 1960 Plymouth Fury with an identical paint job.

In the film, Alan's mother tells her son that his father was run over by a car while he was on his way to a gas station with his spare can. In fact, on June 19, 1999 , Stephen King was hit and nearly killed by a vehicle while walking down Route 5 in Lowell , Maine .

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged that the film's “negligent design” was “outweighed by decent acting and good timing”.

Awards

Jonathan Jackson received a 2005 Saturn Award nomination for Best Young Actor.
