history

Settlement of Lowell began in March 1819 when Alpheus Hayden and Levi Done settled in the area. They had bought the land from the state. Initially, the area was named Deanfield Plantation after the first teacher, Mary C. Dean, and the first priest, Pindar Field. As a town, Lowell was organized under the name Huntersville in 1837 and the name was changed to Lowell the following year in honor of the first person born in the town, Lowell Hayden, son of Aipheus, one of the first two settlers.

A strip of land called Page's Mill Plantation was annexed in 1841 and the Cold Stream Settlement, Passadumkeag in 1842. Land was given to Burlington in 1847.
