Howland is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 1241 inhabitants in 639 households on an area of 92.26 km².

Geographical location
Howland is centrally located in Penobscot County. The eastern boundary of the area is the Penobscot River , which flows south . Centrally in an easterly direction, the Piscataquis River flows through the area of the town, which flows into the Penobscot River. The surface is level, the highest point is the 169 m high Bunker Hill .

history
Howland was organized as a Town on February 10, 1826. Previously, the area was named Township No. 1, Seventh Range North of Waldo Patent (T1 R7 NWP) . The community was named after John Howland . The first settlers arrived in the area in 1818. In 1834 the Howland Dam was built, which also stopped the migration of fish, and the alewive, a species of herring, has not been there since.
To connect Enfield with Howland, the Enfield – Howland line was opened in 1869 . It was shut down and dismantled in 1963, today it is a hiking trail.

The Interstate 95 runs parallel to the north-south direction by the Penobscot River Town. The Main State Route 155 runs east to Cold Stream Pond to Enfield and west to LaGrange.

Howland is home to the Cummings Health Care Facility, which is also available to residents of the surrounding communities.
