Heino Kaski

Heino Wilhelm Daniel Kaski (born June 21, 1885 in Pielisjärvi , † September 20, 1957 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish composer .

Life

He studied composition privately in Helsinki with Erkki Melartin and briefly with Jean Sibelius . With his recommendation he was able to continue his studies with Paul Juon in Berlin from 1911 to 1914 . Back in Finland, Kaski wrote his first major orchestral work, the Symphony in B minor, which premiered in 1919, with the support of Selim Palmgren . He then went back to Berlin to deepen his training at the State University of Music with Otto Taubmann from 1920 to 1924 , and he continued his education during study visits to Italy and France. In 1924 he returned to Finland and worked as a music teacher. In 1950 he was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal.

Heino Kaski wrote around 100 piano works and songs each, as well as choral works, orchestral and chamber music. His melodic, lyrical miniatures in the tradition of Edvard Grieg were best known . Stylistically, he moved between late romanticism and impressionism .
