history

Howland was organized as a Town on February 10, 1826. Previously, the area was named Township No. 1, Seventh Range North of Waldo Patent (T1 R7 NWP) . The community was named after John Howland . The first settlers arrived in the area in 1818. In 1834 the Howland Dam was built, which also stopped the migration of fish, and the alewive, a species of herring, has not been there since.

To connect Enfield with Howland, the Enfield – Howland line was opened in 1869 . It was shut down and dismantled in 1963, today it is a hiking trail.
