Dixmont is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1181 inhabitants in 557 households on an area of 94.35 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Dixmont has a total area of 94.35 km², of which 93.99 km² is land and 0.36 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Dixmont is the most southwestern town in Penobscot County and borders Waldo County to the south . Several small streams flow south through the town, in which there are also some smaller lakes. The surface is rather flat, Mount Harris with 355 m height is the highest point.

history
Dixmont was organized as a town on February 28, 1807. Previously the area was known as Township No. 3, First Range North of Waldo Patent (T3 R1 NWP) or Collegetown or College Township , as the area had been given as a grant to Bowdoin College .
The land was bought by Elijah Dix and later named after him. His son Joseph lived in Hampden, where his daughter Dorothea Lynde Dix , who later became a social reformer and benefactor, was born. Dix sold the land in parcels to the later settlers. Settlement began in 1799.
