history

Dixmont was organized as a town on February 28, 1807. Previously the area was known as Township No. 3, First Range North of Waldo Patent (T3 R1 NWP) or Collegetown or College Township , as the area had been given as a grant to Bowdoin College .

The land was bought by Elijah Dix and later named after him. His son Joseph lived in Hampden, where his daughter Dorothea Lynde Dix , who later became a social reformer and benefactor, was born. Dix sold the land in parcels to the later settlers. Settlement began in 1799.
