The Monroe area was settled shortly after the Frankfort area from 1760. First it was organized as Lee Plantation and on January 12, 1818 as a town called Monroe . The name was chosen in honor of James Monroe , the fifth President of the United States who was in office at the time.

Land was given to Brooks in 1823, other parts of Brooks were added in 1844 and 1883, and parts of Frankfort were added in 1863.

An Os stretches through the area of ​​Monroe , an elevation that was formed in the Quaternary Ice Age . It is extraordinarily complex, dendritic and consists of a vein-like network.
