history

Benjamin Church reached Penobscot Bay with a group of other men in August 1692 and moored on a smaller island near Islesboro. He met French traders and Native Americans and drove them away. He then sailed to Islesboro Island, where he also met French traders and Native Americans who also fled from him. He confiscated a large amount of beaver and elk skins and sailed away.

Islesboro was used as a summer camp for the Native Americans. They called it Pitaubegwimenahanuk ( Eng . The island that lies between two canals ). Regularly came Penobscot and Tarratine to the islands, to hunt and to fish. Excavation sites still bear witness to the camp sites.

The Islesboro area was under the Waldo patent . The first European settler to settle on Islesboro is said to have been Shubael Williams in 1764. He was from Stonington , Connecticut . More settlers followed. During the American Revolutionary War , the residents of Islesboro, who settled between the fronts, tried to negotiate with both sides. Several men from the islands were drafted into the British army against their will. British and American naval forces met on August 13, 1779. The Americans were crushed. All 39 ships were captured, burned or sunk. It was the worst defeat of the American Navy until the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.

A Harvard University scientific expedition observed a total solar eclipse near Williams Cove on October 27, 1780 . Colonel Campbell of the British forces stationed there had given them permission beforehand. Shubael Williams, after whom Williams Cove is named, and his family provided food, shelter and support for the scientists.

By marrying Lucy Flucker, a granddaughter of Samuel Waldo , Henry Knox came into possession of part of the Waldo patent. He bought other parts so that he eventually became the owner of the Waldo patent, which also included Islesboro. The inhabitants of the islands refused to accept this and cited that they believed the islands were outside the three-mile zone. With the reason they went to court in 1788 and challenged the claim to ownership. After several measurements, the court finally found Knox right in 1799 and the land again fell under the Waldo patent. Knox then sold the land to the residents of the islands.

Under the name Islesborough , the former Long Island , 700 Acre Island , Job's Island and the Lime Islands were organized as a town on January 12, 1789 . The name was changed to Islesboro on July 10, 1890. Originally, the residents wanted the name Winchester for their town. The first city meeting took place on April 6, 1789.
