Unity is a town and a census-designated place in Waldo County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 2099 inhabitants in 939 households on an area of ​​107.12 km².

The Census-designated Place Unity includes within this area the town center with an area of ​​1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) and has approx. 500 inhabitants in 244 households.

Geographical location

Unity is northwest of Waldo County and borders Kennebec County to the west . The Unity Pond is bordered to the northeast by the territory. The major rivers are the Twentyfive Mile Stream (the outflow from Unity Pond), Sandy Stream, and Halfmoon Stream . Other notable tributaries to Unity Pond include Carlton Stream , Meadow Brook, and Bithers Brook . In Unity Pond there are three small islets in the southeast. The surface is slightly hilly, the 183 m high Quaker Hill is the highest point.

The main settlement area is south of the lake, with Unity College south of the Twentyfive Mile Stream, which runs there from west to east, and the district of Windemere in the north on the east bank of the lake.

history

The place was originally settled by Quakers . At that time the area was called Twenty-Five Mile Pond Plantation . The name referred to the location of a pond 25 miles from Fort Halifax in Winslow . On the occasion of the Incorporation (constitution as a city) in 1804, the name “Unity” was adopted. The Village School was opened in 1898 . It was in operation until 1953 when a new elementary school was built.

In 1996 the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) acquired 200 acres (81 hectares) of land in Unity, which is now the headquarters. The Common Ground Country Fair, which is organized by MOFGA, draws more than 50,000 visitors to the town each year.

The place is the service center of the northern region of Waldo County. The place is known for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association , the Common Ground Country Fair and the Unity College . It was founded in 1965 to make up for the decline in the poultry industry. In 2007 the college was the largest local employer.
