Freedom is a town in Waldo County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 719 inhabitants in 343 households on an area of ​​57.55 km².

Geographical location

Freedom is to the west of Waldo County and is bordered by Kennebec County to the west . The largest lake in the town is Sandy Pond in the northeast. There are other smaller lakes in the area. The surface is slightly hilly, the 262 m high Sandford Hill is the highest point in the town.

history

Freedom was part of the Plymouth patent . The first settler in the area was Stephen Smith, a former soldier in the American Revolutionary War , who cut a clearing in the forest in 1794. With the help of his brothers, he built the first house in the area that year. Initially, the Smithton Plantation was named after Stephen Smith, later Beaver Hill. When the area was organized as a town on June 11, 1813, it was named Freedom to set a political example during the time of the British-American War .

Shortly after it was founded, Freedom was home to many sawmills and gristmills, of which the Mill at Freedom Falls has been preserved to this day and has been listed as a historical monument. Today there is a restaurant in the building. The Sandy Pond is a reservoir that was created as mill water, but is also a good fishing water with perch , pike and bass.

The Freedom Academy school was in Freedom from 1836 to 1957 when it was destroyed by fire. After that, the Strawberry Fields School was in Freedom. Today Freedom does not have its own school, but belongs to Regional School Unit # 3 and uses the schools in the district.

Culture and sights

Buildings

In Freedom, several structures have been listed and placed on the National Register of Historic Places .

  • Keen Hall , 2017 under the register no. 100001242.
  • Mill at Freedom Falls , 2012 under the registration no. 12000228. The historic mill was built in 1834 as a flour mill and converted into a factory in 1894, in which tool handles and other objects were made. In 1969 the mill, which also served as a school building, was shut down. Today the restaurant "The Lost Kitchen" is operated here.
