history

The area of Knox belonged to the Grant of Waldo patent , previously Muscongus patent. Knox was organized as a town on February 12, 1819. Previously the area was organized as a Knox Plantation. Parts of Thorndike were added in 1831 and parts of Montville in 1833.

The town was named after Henry Knox , who later owned the Waldo patent.
