Carlos Lessa

Carlos Lessa , actually Carlos Francisco Theodoro Machado Ribeiro de Lessa (born July 30, 1936 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † June 5, 2020 there ) was a Brazilian economist and university professor .

Life

He graduated in economics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1959. From 2002 to 2003 he was also the rector of the university. From 2003 to 2004 he was President of the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social, (BNDES), the Brazilian Development Bank. He also held various teaching positions during his academic life, for example at the Instituto Rio Branco, the Brazilian diplomatic school.

He was considered one of the leading economists in Brazil. He wrote numerous works on economics and finance in Brazil.

One of his sons is the well-known singer and songwriter Rodrigo Lessa.

Carlos Lessa died on June 5, 2020 at the age of 83 as a result of COVID-19 . The University of Rio ordered three days of mourning; The former presidents of Brazil, Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff , also commented on his death .
