The Waldo County is a county in the state of Maine of the United States . The county seat is in Belfast , the largest port city is Searsport .
history
The county emerged from a strip of land that the Council for New England awarded two Englishmen, John Beauchamp and Thomas Leverett, for reclamation by new settlers in 1630. This strip of land corresponded approximately to today's Waldow County together with the area of today's Knox County (without the Fox Islands). Within a short time, a trading post was built with craftsmen and farmers on the George's River, on the site of today's Thomaston . The entire area was declared "York County" in 1640. The settlement was interrupted by the war between the English and the French in 1768.
It was not until 1719 that the settlement of the area was continued by John Leverett, the great grandson of one of the original patent holders. He divided the area into 10 areas that were to be colonized by 10 commissioners. These ten areas were in turn subdivided so that a total of twenty sub-areas were handed over to prospectors. Among these twenty prospectors were the brothers Cornelius and John Waldo from Boston, who later bought other shares in the twenty sub-areas and thus gave the region its name.
Samuel Waldo in particular , who had been appointed General of the English in 1726, excelled in promoting the settlement of immigrants. His efforts to attract new settlers in Europe were crowned with success.
Due to the steadily increasing population and thus constantly increasing administrative expenses, Lincoln County was spun off from York County in 1760, and in 1789 from this again Hancock County. On February 7, 1827, Waldo County was separated from Hancock County by a further subdivision. At that time it also contained the area of what is now Knox County, which was only separated from Waldo County in 1860 and took over five larger settlements.
After that, the population numbers remained at approximately the same level; the 1870 census showed 34,640 inhabitants, the 1880 census only 32,468 inhabitants of the county. Even today, with around 36,000 inhabitants, this number is in the same range.
One of the county's sites has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Fort Knox , due to its historical significance . A total of 63 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 11, 2017).
geography
According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2209 square kilometers. Of these, 319 square kilometers, corresponding to 14.43 percent, are water areas.
In contrast to the counties of Maine further north, the county has no mountain ranges or lake plateaus, as it only includes the coastal strip around the mouth of the navigable Penobscot River , which is an important traffic route into the hinterland, and the plains to the west of it. A large number of offshore islands make the area interesting for tourists. The county's largest port city, Searsport, is conveniently located near the main settlements in the western delta of the river. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Penobscot County , Hancock County , Knox County , Lincoln County , Kennebec County, and Somerset County .
