Sagahadoc County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The administrative seat, Shire Town , is Bath . It is the smallest county in Maine by area. Its name comes from the name of the Indians who used to live here for the lower reaches of the Kennebec River , which flows through the county.

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 959 square kilometers. 301 square kilometers, or 31.41 percent, are water areas. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Kennebec County , Lincoln County , Cumberland County, and Androscoggin County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 35,214 people. There were 14,117 households and 9,641 families. The population density was 54 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.49% White, 0.92% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, and 0.38% other races Groups; 1.21% were from two or more races. 1.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,117 households, 33.20% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.60% were married couples living together, 9.60% were single mothers. 31.70% were not families. 25.20% are single households and 9.30% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.80% of residents under 18 years of age, 6.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,908 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,714. Males had a median income of $ 34,039 versus $ 24,689 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,378. 8.60% of the population and 6.90% of families are below the poverty line. 12.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.40% were 65 years of age or older.
