history
Parts of the Bowdoin area belonged to the Pejepscot Purchase , the rest to the Plymouth Claim (Kennebec Purchase) .
The Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts James Bowdoin had legal title to the area of West Bowdoinham Plantation in 1779 and granted rights to the land to third parties which included an area which he was two miles wide adjacent to the Cathance River and Merrymeeting Bay reaching as far as the Androscoggin River, designated. There were also settlers who had acquired the land from the Indians. When Bowdoin had a horse trail built through the area in 1750, he came across settlers who claimed that their ancestors had already settled in the area.
On March 21, 1788, the area was organized as a town. The area of the town also included what is now Lisbon and what was then Webster, now Sabattus. The town was named after James Bowdoin. Bowdoin College in Brunswick was later named after his son James Bowdoin III . In order to allow Bowdoin access to the Kennebec River and thus to the trade and travel routes, James Rogers and Ebenezer Temple commissioned in 1797 the construction of a road through Bowdoinham. Land for the founding of Lisbon, initially known as Thompsonborough , was given up in 1798. The new town was organized on June 22, 1799. In 1840 the area of the Town of Lisbon was divided and the Town of Webster was founded.
