history

The Indians called the Lisbon Fall Anmecangin , which means a lot of fish . Thomas Purchas from Brunswick owned a house by this waterfall in 1650. He caught and dried salmon for the London market. The first settler was probably Mr. White, who lived in a log cabin on the road to Webster Corner. He later bought Whites Hill. Originally, Lisbon was part of the town of Bowdoin. The Town of Lisbon was founded on June 22nd, 1799 under the name Thompsonborough in honor of the Thompson family from Topham, who owned large parts of the area that was originally known as the Little River Plantation . The name was changed to Lisbon on February 20, 1802. Little River Plantation, now Lisbon Falls, was part of an acquisition, it was located between the Gore, Androscoggin, Sabattus and other small rivers and was given to Lisbon Town in 1808. In 1840 part of the area in the northern part was separated for the formation of a new town called Webster (Sabattus).

In 1799 the first ferry was put into service above Bend Island by John Dean. In 1810 one was set up below the island. Both were in operation until 1817. At this point a bridge was built. This was carried away twice and a ferry has been in operation since 1846.

In addition to agriculture, there were sawmills and flour mills in the town, which were operated with water power from the streams. Brick factories and textile production were added later. In 1864 a mill for wool production was built. It stayed that way until it burned down in 1987.
