Greene is a town in Androscoggin County in the state of Maine in the United States . In Greene there are 4,350 inhabitants in 1,880 households on an area of 91.1 km² (status: 2010 census).
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , Greene has a total area of 91.14 km², of which 83.60 km² is land and 7.54 km² consists of water .
Greene is located in the heavily forested hill country of southern Maine. Important elevations are Clarke Mountain (208 m), Merrill Hill (204 m) and Little Sabbatus Mountain (160 m). On the western border of the town the Androscoggin River flows , some smaller watercourses flow in different directions through the community, but flow to the Partly after considerable detours, all in the Androscoggin River. Some larger lakes ( Allen Pond , Berry Pond , Little Sabbatus Pond etc.) are also in the area of the town.

There are several settlement areas in Green, Alta (location of a former post office, established in 1900), East Greene (location of a former post office), Foggs Corner , Greene (Greene Village) , Greene Corner (Greene Corners) , Greene Depot (location of a former post office ), Nason Beach , North Greene (site of a former post office) and Sprague Mill .

The mean mean temperature in Greene ranges from −6.7 ° C (20 ° Fahrenheit ) in January to 21.7 ° C (71 ° Fahrenheit) in July. The snowfall between October and May is up to 0.5 meters as a peak in January, about twice as high as the average snow depth in the USA. The daily sunshine duration in summer is at the lower end of the range of values in the USA, in winter it is in the middle.
history
Greene, at that time still part of the town of Lewiston, was settled from 1773, but only proclaimed an independent town on June 18, 1788. On March 22, 1843 a part of what is now Wales was spun off. On April 20, 1852, part of the area was returned to Lewiston's administration; on February 7, 1895 another part was given to the Town Sabattus (then Webster).

Economy and Infrastructure
The most important occupation in Greene is health care (as of 2015), more than 13% of all employed people can be assigned to this occupational group: 309 people in total, of which 276 women (89.3%). This is followed by construction (8.3%) and public administration (6.2%).
traffic
US Highway 202 , which connects it with Lewiston in the southwest and Augusta in the northeast, is the community's main traffic route. A small commercial airport with a runway, Rocky Ridge Airport , is available to small private planes; an international airport can be found in Augusta.
The Cumberland Center – Bangor railway , operated by Pan Am Railways , runs through the city and serves freight traffic; a previously existing passenger station has been closed.

In addition to the elementary school listed below and a public library with more than 12,000 volumes, the Julia Adams Morse Memorial Library , the area's public hospital, Green Acres Major , with 59 beds is located in Greene.
education
Green is part of the Maine School Administrative District 52 with Leeds and Turner . In Green there is a public, six-class elementary school with an upstream kindergarten, the Greene Central School . For secondary schools, the surrounding communities, especially Lewingston, must be approached. The nearest colleges are in Standish and South Portland , and the University of Maine has places in Augusta and Farmington .
