Settlement of the Livermore area began in the 1770s under the name Port Royal . The area was named after Deacon Elijah Livermore, one of the first settlers in the area. First, the area of ​​today's Town Livermore was given together with the area of ​​Livermore Falls in 1795 with the rights of a town and on March 1, 1844 Livermore Falls was separated from this area and founded as an independent town.

In the early 19th century, the region was mainly used for agriculture, there were apple orchards and dairies. In the mid-19th century, shoe and paper mills were established, including the Umbagog Pulp Company , founded by Hugh J. Chisholm . In 1897 the third bridge was built over the Androscoggin River . At 800 feet (244 meters) in length, it was the longest single span bridge in New England at the time .
