Hugh J. Chisholm

Hugh Joseph Chisholm (born May 2, 1847 in Chippawa , Ontario , Canada , † July 1, 1912 in New York ) was a Canadian entrepreneur. He was later naturalized in the United States . Chisholm was born the fifth of ten children to parents of Scottish origin. His founding and running of pulp, paper, fiber ceramics, lighting, and power companies, as well as banks and railways, made him a leading figure in the Maine industry .

He laid the foundation stone for forest management for International Paper . The Otis Falls Pulp Company mill in Jay , built by him in 1888, was then the third largest paper mill in the country. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Oxford Paper Company in Rumford began producing with paper and from then on produced all postcards for the state post. William A. Russell, co-founder of the International Paper Company, developed a close relationship with him.

On September 5, 1872, he married Henrietta Mason.
