Androscoggin County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The county seat is in Auburn .

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of ​​1,288 square kilometers. This includes 70 square kilometers, corresponding to 5.42 percent of the total area, water areas. The county is bordered in a clockwise direction by Franklin County , Kennebec County , Sagadahoc County , Cumberland County, and Oxford Counties .

history

One of the county's sites has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village , due to its historical significance . A total of 103 buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

The county had 103,793 people as of the 2000 census . There were 42,028 households and 27,192 families. The population density was 85 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.98% White, 0.66% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 0.28% other races Groups; 1.22% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.95% of the population.

Of the 42,028 households, 30.90% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 49.60% were married couples living together, 10.80% were single mothers. 35.30% were not families. 28.30% are single households and 11.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.91 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.90% residents under 18 years of age, 9.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.20 males.
