history
The history of Mechanic Falls is closely tied to the history of Poland and Minot. The original grant for the Bakerstown Plantation was given in 1765 by the Massachusetts General Court to Captain Thomas Baker and other soldiers for their service in the Battle of Quebec in 1690. Bakerstown Plantation became independent as Poland, from this area Minot was founded in 1802 as an independent town. The border between these towns was the Little Androscoggin River. It also separated the settlements from Mechanic Falls. The Moinot part was first settled by Dean Andrews in 1836. He was followed by Peter Thayer, Amos Chapman, Eli Washburne and others. The area developed very quickly as the arable land was fertile and the rivers made good trade relations possible. The colonization of this part of Poland began in 1830 by Mr. Jordan, who used the abundance of wood in this area for his timber trade. He was followed by Isiah Perkins and others. The Little Androscoggin runs through the city and divides it in half, this has been a great asset and stimulator for growth from the start. Because the operation of water mills was also very effective at this point. Mechanic Falls was founded on March 22, 1893 as an independent town.
Industrial development
In the late 1840s, a railway line, the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad , made it possible to do business and trade with the cities of Portland and Montreal . The first paper mill was founded in 1850. Other industries produced canned goods, bricks, confectionery, corn, carts, and tools. In 1872, John Witham Penney began making steam engines, machinery, and foundry items at Mechanic Falls. Fourteen years later, his two sons, AR and SR Penney, partnered with John Witham Penney to form JW Penney and Sons , which became one of the largest engineering companies in Maine.
In 1981 Marcal Papier closed the city's last paper mill.
