David Dunn (born January 17, 1811 in Cornish , York County , Massachusetts , † February 17, 1894 in Mechanic Falls , Maine ) was an American politician and 1844 acting governor of the state of Maine.

Career

Born in what is now Maine, David Dunn attended community schools in his homeland. He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1833, and then opened a law practice in Poland Corner . Dunn decided to embark on a political career in 1840 when he successfully ran for a seat in the Maine House of Representatives . He held this mandate for four years and was a speaker for the last two years . On January 1, 1844, Governor Edward Kavanagh resigned from his post and Dunn, who was then acting as speaker, then took over his official duties. He only held this post until January 3, 1844, when he resigned from his post as speaker. Dunn returned to his practice as a lawyer and withdrew from public life for a brief period. He was later appointed a clerk in the Washington, DC Post Office in 1857 , a position he held until 1861.
