In 1906, Brann became a lawyer for the City of Lewiston . There he became head of the tax collector in 1908 . Between 1909 and 1913 he was employed by the probate court and then judge at the Lewiston Municipal Court for two years. Between 1915 and 1916 and again from 1922 to 1924 he was mayor of this place. Brann was a member of the Democratic Party and temporarily served as its chairman in the state of Maine. As a candidate for his party, he was elected the new governor of Maine in 1932 . Governor of Maine

Brann took up his new office on January 4, 1933 and, after being re-elected in 1934, was able to remain in office until January 6, 1937. At the beginning of his term in office, the country was still suffering severely from the consequences of the great economic crisis. Only in the course of time was it possible to gradually overcome this crisis with the help of the Federal Government's New Deal policy. But Brann also made his own efforts to overcome the crisis. For example, he made two million dollars available from the sale of government bonds as emergency aid to those affected by the crisis. Brann also tried to make the state attractive to tourism and attract tourists to Maine.

In the years 1936 and 1938 Brann applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . Also in 1938 the attempt to return to the office of governor failed. Then he withdrew into private life. Louis Brann died on February 3, 1948. He was married to Martha J. Cobb, with whom he had four children.
