Joseph Hartwell Williams (born June 2, 1814 in Augusta , Maine , † July 19, 1896 ) was an American politician and Governor of Maine from 1857 to 1858 .

Career

After elementary school, Williams attended Harvard University until 1830 . He then studied law at Dane Law School in Cambridge. Williams began his political career as a Democrat , but joined the newly formed Republican Party in 1854 . In 1857 he was a member and even president of the Maine State Senate. With the resignation of Governor Hannibal Hamlin on February 25, 1857, as President of the Senate, he had to end his term as governor. Joseph Williams was governor of Maine between February 25, 1857 and January 6, 1858. Between 1864 and 1866 and again from 1873 to 1875 Williams was a member of the Maine State Parliament.

In 1879 he applied unsuccessfully to return to the office of governor. Then he retired from politics and worked as a lawyer. Joseph Williams died on July 19, 1896. He was married to Apphia Putnam. They had a child together.
