Janet T. Mills
Janet Trafton Mills (born December 30, 1947 in Farmington , Maine ) is an American lawyer and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 2009 to 2010 and 2013 to 2019 and has been the 75th Governor of Maine since January 2, 2019 . She is the first woman in this position.
Life
Janet T. Mills was born in Farmington to S. Peter Mills and Katherine Coffin Mills. She graduated from Farmington High School, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston and studied law at the University of Maine School of Law . There she was one of the authors of the Maine Law Review .
Janet T. Mills served as Assistant Attorney General in the prosecution of homicides and other serious crimes from 1976 to 1980 and was elected District Attorney for Androscoggin County , Franklin County and Oxford Counties in 1980 and re-elected until 1995. She was the first female district attorney in the northeastern part of the United States.
As a member of the Democratic Party , she was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 2003 to 2008, and Maine Attorney General from 2009 to 2010 and 2013 to 2019. When she was elected 55th Attorney General of Maine, she was the first woman in that capacity.
Together with her brother, the former Maine State Senator S. Peter Mills , she practiced from 1995 to 2008 in Skowhegan in the law firm Wright and Mills . From 2011 to 2012, Mills taught Criminal Law at the University of Maine at Augusta and worked as a consultant for the Litigation Group of Preti Flaherty, LLP .
Mills was a co-founder of the Maine Women's Lobby and an active member of several other organizations, including the Margaret Chase Smith Foundation Board . She advocates strengthening privacy and personal rights against Google and calls for more transparency and data protection.
On January 2, 2019, Mills took office as the 75th Governor of Maine. She is the first woman in this office and successor to Paul LePage .
Janet T. Mills was married to Stanley Kuklinski . He died in 2014. Kuklinski's first wife died of cancer and he was a single father of five daughters, whose stepmother became Mills.
