Richard S. Cohen

Richard Stockman Cohen (born April 5, 1937 in Boston , Massachusetts , † April 13, 1998 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician who was the 50th Maine Attorney General from 1979 to 1981 .

Life

Richard S. Cohen was born in Boston and grew up in Brookline , Massachusetts . The Brookline High School he finished in 1954. He studied at the University of Georgia and made his bachelor's degree in 1958 and then at the Boston University Law School which he finished in 1963. Immediately afterwards he worked from 1963 to 1965 in the office of the Maine Attorney General, as an assistant and was during this time an advisor to the office for taxation. He founded the Criminal Matters Chamber in 1965 and was the first director of that division in 1967. He developed the laws that make up today's system of central state investigation and prosecution of manslaughter in Maine. In the 1970s, Cohen was a key figure in the revision of the state's criminal code and in the creation of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

A member of the Republican Party , Cohen was the 50th Maine Attorney General from 1979 to 1981. During this time he worked with Governor Joseph E. Brennan to draw the boundaries in connection with the claims of two Indian tribes of Maine, which claimed about 60 percent of the land area. After serving as Attorney General, President Ronald Reagan made him a United States Attorney . He held this office for 12 years.

After leaving that office, Cohen worked as a special advisor to the Passamaquoddy Tribes and later chaired a commission promoting collaboration between the state and its Indian tribes.

Richard S. Cohen was married to Suzanne Cohen and the couple had three children. He died on April 13, 1998 in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, while he was about to undergo surgery for Crohn's disease , which he had suffered from for several years. His grave is in Harrison Village Cemetery in Harrison.
