Hannibal Emery Hamlin

Hannibal Emery Hamlin (born August 22, 1858 in Hampden , Maine , † March 6, 1938 in Bangor , Maine) was an American attorney and politician who was Maine Attorney General from 1905 to 1908 .

Life

Hannibal Emery Hamlin was born in Hampden as the son of Hannibal Hamlin and Ellen Vesta Emery. His father was Vice President of the United States under Abraham Lincoln .

Hamlin attended school in Bangor and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College in 1879. He then studied at Boston University Law School and in 1882 he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws.

He was admitted to the bar in 1883 and practiced in Ellsworth with the law firm Hale & Emery, where Lucilius A. Emery was a partner of Eugene Hale . After Emery was appointed magistrate on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and left the firm, he continued to practice with Eugene Hale and they called themselves Hale & Hamlin. The firm still exists today.

A member of the Republican Party , Hamlin served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1893 to 1895 and chaired the Judiciary Committee in 1895. He was a Judge Advocate General on Governor Llewellyn Powers' staff from 1897 to 1904 and a member of the Maine Senate from 1899 to 1899 1891. He was President of the Senate in 1901. From 1905 to 1906 he was Maine Attorney General and President of the Bar Association of Main from 1923 to 1924.

Hannibal E. Hamlin was not married; he died on March 6, 1938 in Bangor, Maine. His grave is in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
