He studied at Waterville under the guidance of Boutelle and Noyes. In 1850 he was admitted to the bar and in the same year he was a member of a commission that should be active in California , as there were hardly any trained lawyers. Until 1855 he was a member of the Democratic Party , but he disliked the party's attitude to slavery, which he had rejected since his student days. That is why he left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party .

A member of the Republican Party, he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1857 to 1859 and 1869, and Speaker of the House from 1858 to 1859 and a member of the Maine Senate in 1860. Drummond was a supporter of Hannibal Hamlin and on the Republican Congress in 1964, he campaigned for Hamlin's candidacy for vice-president.

Drummond was a member of the Board of Trustees of Colby College and from 1888 also chairman. In 1871 the college awarded him an honorary doctorate "Doctor of Laws" in recognition of his achievement. He served as legal advisor to the Portland and Kennebec Railroad until his death, and in 1876 he was elected director of Union Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1881, he and his son founded the law firm Drummond & Drummond in Portland, which is the oldest law firm in Portland and is still active today.

In addition, Drummond belonged to the Freemasons . He was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine, General Grand High Priest of the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, as well as General Grand Master of the General Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters and Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, Northern Jurisdiction .

Drummond was also active as a historian and writer. He wrote several books on the history of his family and his wife, as well as Freemasonry in the United States.
