Stephen Emery (politician)

Stephen Albert Emery (born April 29, 1790 in Minot , Maine , † November 18, 1863 in Auburn , Maine) was an American lawyer and politician , and Maine Attorney General from 1839 to 1840 .

Life

Stephen Albert Emery was born in Minot, Maine to Moses Emery (1744-1836) and Ruth Bodwell (1750-1831). He attended Bowdoin College and graduated from there in 1814. From 1814 to 1816 he worked as a teacher, at the same time he studied law , graduated in 1817 and was admitted to the bar in 1818.

He then worked as a lawyer in Paris from 1819 to 1863 . From 1826 to 1838 he was a judge in the probate court of Oxford County and from 1839 to 1840 Attorney General of Maine. He was a District Court judge from 1850 to 1852. Emery was a member of the Democratic Party .

Stephen Emery married Sarah Stowell (1792–1822) for the first time in 1815. After her death he married Jannet Loring (1800-1859) for the second time in 1825. There are two daughters from these marriages; Sarah Jane (1815–1855), married to Hannibal Hamlin , who married her sister Ellen Vesta (1835–1925) after her death, and two sons; George F. Emery (1817–) and Stephen Albert Emery junior (1841–1891).

Emery died on November 18, 1863 in Auburn, Maine. His grave is in Oak Hill Cemetery in Auburn.
